BLatent riff jacking in tunes?

Post by chronicrecords » Sun Jan 30, 2011 8:02 am

I was just wondering if its considered acceptable to completely copy a main riff from a song then call it your own tune?, no remix or anything?

I was on beatport and heard

which clearly has the exact same main riff and synth sound as

honestly not trying to start a flame war here, im just trying to understand what is acceptable being a new producer and listening to alot of rap tunes i often find myself wanting to incorperate something from a rap tune to a dubstep tune im working on but im always paranoid about copying, plagiarizing etc..

so what is considered acceptable when copying tunes?

mate just do it i doubt anyone will really call you out on it unless you rip off a full tune, like if you took a little bit your just sampling it
best example i can think of is chase and status with saxon

listen to the intro in both and tell me there not the same, that 1 blatantly takes the piss

right the dose 1 was influenced by sub focus, hes taken a riff thats the same but put a major twist on it so its his own

i hope all that made sense

I always thought these two sounded pretty similar? No where near a rip off but maybe used the same sample and cut it up differentley?

and

Sound slightly similar. Just at the start really, and there's a little bit of percussion on Two Faced that sounds similar so some percussion in Mud.

Plagiarism is worthless unless there's a unique twist to it's use, like Evol probably thought he was being a real bad ass mofo putting that Ice Cube melody on with a 'dirty' bassline. Not always to everyone's taste and getting your own stuff ripped off is a piss-take but then again imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...

american young people like it when they hear things in dubstep songs that they can easily relate to, and things that sound familiar. if it sounds good go for it.

Straight up plagiarism is good for nothing. Done right, sampling can be a real art form. Sometimes you got to forget where something is taken from and instead focus on where its being taken to

Check it:
