Choosing monitors..

Hi all,
im in the market for a new set of monitors. Nothing too fancy as I'm only making beats at home but I do intend on having these for a while and want the best that I can afford. I've found a pair of Fostex PM0.4s online for $315AUD (about 195 quid at the moment, not sure if thats in line with UK pricing but we tend to pay more out here anyway) and have also been looking at M-audio AV40s which are about $100 cheaper! I was looking at KRKs but they are the most expensive of the lot and have heard a few negative things about them, especially with regards to bass.

Either way, Im pretty much torn between Fostex and M-audio, I dont mind paying the extra 100 for Fostex if they are clearly better but am reading conflicting reviews online and dont really have the opportunity to listen to them in store. Im working in quite a small bedroom and obviously need something that is able to handle a heavy dubstep bass line. I'm open to suggestions if you know of any other monitors in this price range.

I was finally able to purchase a pair of krk rokit 6s. I've never owned monitors before but I was shocked at all the things in my own music I'd never heard before. I work in a small bedroom w furniture in it and feel like anymore bass response would be too much.

Remember that you need to consider the room you are going to use the monitors in. When I described my bedroom studio to the sales rep...who is on comission...he strongly suggested I not go w the next size up.

But again you do want good lowend response for making bass music.

I would avoid the M-Audio AV-40s, that model in particular lacks the articulation and bass you will need.

I am not sure about the Fostex, the KRKs are a good start.

Foxtex made there own drivers and there very good at it too... my betting is that sound pretty lush

krk rokit 6's are sick

I cant recommend rokits enough. Ive got the rp8s gen1 and they are beautiful. My advice is to hold out and save a little more then check out ebay for second hand ones mine were £200 from a mate. Honestly you wont regret waiting and saving up I bought some alesis m1 passives I saw for cheap they were nice until I played my shit through my mates krks I nearly shat a brick haha

I read a TON of stuff about monitors and had been considering the KRKs. I bought them almost on a whim at the local Guitar Center--listened to them compared to all the other monitors in that price range GC had set up. A couple days before I'd been going through the "Take a photo of your setup" thread and so many people had KRKs in there; I finally said fuck it, I can't live with trying to produce on my hifi system anymore! Bought them. Love them. Annoy the neighbors with them

I'd really recommend them too, especially for someone in my situation--a hobbyist who wants to get more serious about his hobby. The situation appeared that I was either going to spend 400-600 on KRKs or get near 1,000 in active monitors. I'm not sure my car is worth a 1,000 dollars at this point.
