Hey ninjas, to make a short story shorter my uncle and his wife are starting a tanning salon and volunteered me to make their company sIgn...(I am getting paid though) the problem is I have no idea where to begin. I've been at this for close to a month and have scrapped everything I've tried because it looks more fitting for a website than a sign. If anyone has any tips I will he eternally in your debt...or atleast until April :)

On a side note i'm thinking of changing my name to Fat Man and using the slogan "my bass isnt the onlly thing that's fat..."
I am American after all lol :cornlol:

Always start by thinking of 3 colors that could represent the company. Then, look up symbols and
pictures that could represent the company. Then I'd start sketching.

uuuhhh... what's the name of the salon?? pretty good starting point generally, play around with type, maybe a pun if the place isn't trying to be too classy.. why did they 'volunteer' you for the job if you don't design?

Just write the name of the company in Microgramma and leave it at that

Microgramma was used in many space tv shows as a primary font

It's widely considered not only in poor taste, but generally a sign of a poor designer to play off pop culture references.

Microgramma/Eurostile is everywhere, its not poor taste at all, its an absolutely quality font. Very versatile.

I collect photos of Microgramma, got about 100 so far, no joke

The fact that it is everywhere means you should try and design something that stands out over something familiar.

Very lazy design technique and a reason it's usually only done by photoshop heroes.

Per the OP's request, if it's on a billboard, storefront, or sign you want to associate colors and font with your target audience. IE are you going after high class, youthful, all audiences? These will help determine the color scheme and font you would most likely want to use.
