Can anyone give me a suggestion of a reasonable sub to add to my exisiting monitor set up (2 RP5's) ?

Ive been told that subwoofers are bad for production but dont take my word for it tho

You dont want a sub for producing...I have 2 12 inch downfiring subs hooked to my comp and when i use them for producing my tracks come out waaaaaaaaaay to bassy. But if you want one just for listening youll need a decent reciever. I recommend a downfiring sub.

Usually I do most of the production on the monitors, once I'm done with all of that I fire up the sub.

Get some final tweaks then it's sorted!

once you start using a bass in production... ya guna start getn sub heavy tracks, but they will be full in all freqs.
only prob is the response ya get on a home stereo.car etc.

Before you spend loads of money on a subwoofer, make sure that your room has proper acoustic treatment because more likely than adding a subwoofer will only exacerbate and existing issues that you have with how your room sounds.
Search gearslutz or google "realtraps guides' and that should help.

Im going to aggree and disaggree with parts of what people said here.

1> Bullllllssshhhiiit you dont need access to a sub to make bass music. Anyone up there telling you your little 5's and your eyes are enough to monitor a sine wave at 40hz are outright liars. You dont need to leave the sub powered on the entire time you work, but it WILL change the way you define sub bass. Having access to one to listen to final mixes through and to switch on when your working with the really low notes, is a really, really big advantage.

2> I completely aggree with what EDN's saying about making sure one will agree with your room acoustics. Consider your workspace as having a max. headroom within it too, you can only put so much power/sound into a box before it starts to sound shit. Dont overdo it on a sub (chances are you dont need an 18" in a cab lol)... and if you can, try to buy from somewhere with a good return policy lol, so you can take it home, set it up and check it acoustically and take it back if it makes mud out of your environment.

3> Actual acoustic treatment, probably not toooo needed as an amature producer as long as you dont overpower things with the woofer. Itll help you one day to know HOW to acoustically treat a space, and yeah, itd probably change the sound of your room a bit if you got it done, but as long as your ears are well adapted to your space... meh.

I know alot of what I said there arent golden-rule-professional advice. But their honest, rare in and of itsself on the internet these days.

My songs got allot better after I got a sub. oh my lord jesus!! you might need to calibrate it! of course the mixes will be shit if you turn the sub up all the way.

if ya makin' bass music subs are the shit. take a bit of time to set up though.

On problem I found when i added a sub: my music started to sound like crap on a shit stereo.
