- Dry vocals (90s music had super-heavy 100% web Reverb on EVERYTHING, 00’s got dryer and dryer until almost nothing on vocals, esp in HipHop)
Beyond this, it’s hard to tell until your about 5 years FWD looking back...

Lots of sounds. Garage rock revival, 'the' bands, mainstream r&b/hip-hop, autotune, electro-house, 'metalcore'.
I think it'll also be remembered as a 'festival' decades. Festivals were already starting to get big again, after a decade long hiatus, in the early/mid '90s, but I think this decade was the that made festivals one of the biggest plays when it comes to music consumption and distribution.

early 00's was a strange, dry, and unoriginal point in time. i remember being veryyy bored in the early 2000's. i had a blast in 1999 and then the following years just couldnt compete.
fox family became abc family (aka television for divorced mothers and angsty 12 year old girls) and hip hop went to complete shit. id rather keep that shit in the past

it depends quite a bit on whether you mean the top 40 stuff or music listener's choices. i'd say both categories have developed a certain sound in the noughties. for the first one i'd definately say (besides the obvious autotunes etc) the vintage soul-diva sort of sound that amy winehouse started. and then duffy and the odd radio single that portrays the same kind of style. also the horrible "discoesque" garage rock á la franz ferdinand, keane, mando diao, kings of leon and so on.. as for the more "serious" music i'd say the trend would be leaning more and more to electronic influences, also the sub-pop style neo-folk bands. it's an interesting topic!

Festivals now aren't as good the ones in the 90s. They're much more a commercial venture with huge sponsorship from the likes of Vodafone, they're just giant corporate shows and environments for adverts and branding now. That happen to have live music.
