logic vs ableton

Post by xrylex » Fri Mar 11, 2011 5:41 pm

curious if any dsf logic users have made the switch over to ableton?

im dj'ing in ableton, but produce in logic.... i know logic inside and out and dont have to think about much of what im doing, but i feel like some of logic's workflow is completely retarded at times. seems like a huge percentage of users on dsf are producing in ableton, interested in hear feedback from anyone that has experience in both daws.

Make your own judgements based on your research.

I personally find ableton perfect for my needs, alot of people will disagree, "vs" situations will never produce conclusive results, so find out for yourself.

might not have been clear in my post.

im not trying to choose a daw. im an experienced logic user... and obviously both daws have benefits. i have no prob making up my own mind, just looking for some outside opinions and wondering if the grass is greener on the ableton side of the fence.. if there is someone out that there made the jump from logic to ableton and thinks its the best thing since jesus, i want to hear why. ive spent a bunch of time working in ableton so im familiar with live and its functionality.

thnx peeps.

I've been producing for more than 5 years with ableton and all i have to say is that the sound engine isn't as good as Logic. It's ok, i'm not saying it's bad, is just not as clear- transparent as logic's engine.

As for the plugins ableton's doesnt cut it, really. I switched from able's eq and compressors to fabfilter ones and the sonic quality of my productions have improved a lot. I've been trying out logic everyone once in a while to get used to it and make the switch; It's difficult because able's workflow is incredible easy and you can brainstorm ideas in minutes.

Just to clarify, i find the ableton Eq's good for substractive eq but to push some curves up they sound terrible, compare it with fabfilters one and you'll hear the difference, plus fabfilter's have a built in analyzer which comes very handy to nail mixdowns.

Plain wrong and has been disproved lots of times. The engine is en par with logic, in fact theres no significant quality difference between any of the modern DAWs . All about the workflow. OP go with what suits you best. Its just a tool.

funny, i'm asking myself the exact same question. Sometimes i stop producing for a while just because i do stuff wrong due to idiotic workflow and it gets on my nerves...

I'll give you that, the engine is good, didnt mean to trash it. Remember that I didnt said "the engine sucks" I just said that IN MY OPINION logic's is a bit better but it's not only that, the bundled plugins are not near logic's, even if you can "work out" some stuff with them they are a bit weird. This is just the opinion of a 5 years ableton user that have been using logic from time to time but can't move because im stuck on the great workflow ableton provides me.

I like getting started with Ableton, but I really hate the arrangement window. Something about how it looks just makes me not want to use it.
This. I basically hate anything with that "brutal electro" sound; it sounds all like HUGLAGHALGHALGHAL

i made the switch from logic to ableton...

i prefer live for getting all my ideas down, workflow blah blah blah

but sometimes i export everything and do a mixdown in logic cos i prefer the plug ins. im not too sure on the whole quality flex, i think thats just a fallacy people are pushing
