samples vs. vst's / software instruments in production?

hi guys, so im new to this forum and was wondering how you prefer producing the sounds you want. the title says it all really, my question is, are you a sample and sound shaping kind of guy or a hardcore vst / software instrument user? and what do you think gives you the best results? personally making a sample end up sounding the way you want, for me gives you far better results / satisfaction and adds (in my opinion) a better dynamic overall to your work. but if your into vst / software instruments more, why do you prefer this and do you think it gives your track a better feel? obviously there's a load of producers out there who use both of the mentioned methods in there tunes, but in your opinion what do you favour? peace

Can't say I favor either, just gotta use whatever means necessary to get the sound you want, although there is something very satisfying about toying with parameters on a soft synth to get the exact sound you need.

software samplers (which most people use) are VST's/software instruments. i think you mean samplers vs. synths.
given a choice between the 2 i'd choose samplers as you can use synth samples but can't synthesize a breakbeat.

depends on the sound I may have to bounce what Im doin in my synth and bring it in my sampler to do some more work

both have there place. Personally I guess a prefer using synths, for stuff like pads and bass lines but for drums I always use samples. Actually the only things I really use samples for are drums and a few incidentals, and vox and the rare occasion I use them.

like said it really depends but for a textured sound, its hard to beat a sample off an old vinyl record

That's not true. You can synthesize a breakbeat. If you've ever used massive, their step performer thing is perfect for using your synth to create beats. As a matter of fact there's a few presets that come with massive that are in fact breakbeats. Essentialy you can do it with other synths as well it will just require a lot of manual automation to get the same result. I wish more synths would take a queue from NI and make synths more beat friendly.
Overally I probably use my sampler more than my instruments now. I do a lot of resampling so without my sampler I would lose a big portion of how I work. I prefer working with audio files over synth patterns when I actually begin working on a project.

Fuck that, I'll go take a bath in reactor 4. I don't give a fuck.
I say use whatever works for you to make music you're happy with. Personally, I don't see an either or. Sampler on the left hand, synth on the right, give'em the old one two.

Both, but I prefer synths over sampling (at the moment at least).

it depends on what your making.
recording ya own samples is the key,
I feel that softsynths aren't quite there yet.
I want more dynamics & colour!
BUT... midi is just so easy & thru constant tweaking, it can sound real

I think it just has to do with the situation. Use whatever feels right for the song

That's not true. You can synthesize a breakbeat.
a breakbeat by definition is a live drum recording usually from a record which is sampled and chopped and or looped. you can make beats with synths but you cannot create breakbeats.

What if you sampled and chopped or looped a live synth recording in the same way though?
