squatting and that...

Post by laurent__duval » Fri Mar 18, 2011 2:30 pm

just had a heated debate on facebook about squatting.

basically i feel that its alright as long as its done in genuinely unused building but that if someone comes along and obviously owns the building etc and asks you to leave you should just move on. and also that i hate when people try to dress it up as "political activism".

wondered what you lot thought about it...

If its done properly its fine. I've acctually lived in a squat myself for a few weeks in harder times. Taught me alot about things. Without it, I would've been out on the streets in the freezing cold. Some people out there rely on squatting.

Exactly my thoughts ;-)

If you find anything in the street and the owner comes back to you and ask his thing back, what are you gonna say? 'I found it, it's mine'. This is just plain stupid

Honestly though, if you have a genuine need to squat i.e you're homeless then yeah go ahead. As long as its not someone else's home because that defeats the point. Or if the building has been abandoned for a long time and they're no signs of further development, and you have plans to do something productive with it. These are the only two cases of it being acceptable imo.

Seems like a bunch of rich uni kids have decided to take it up now because they think they have an opinion that's more important then everyone else's though.

got no problem with it, private ownership in capitalism implies the right to control property, property is theft, maaan!

couple of mates used to live in squats, the squats were always quite clean and well appointed but hated the idea of living with that many trustfarians.

(said with the intent and in the manner of someone who isnt being a dick about it) why?
If you had a building you hadn't used in a while, and you found there were people living there cleanly and respectably, who were happy to move on if you ever needed to use it? Not that all squatters are going to be like this, but your statement included them and id be interested to hear how someone could justify that!

For potential time saving, I think its worth saying now that the sentence "because its mine" isnt going to carry much weight for me :P
