Hey guys, I've been moving from more melodic dubstep back into the darker, more underground side of things lately and while all my bass production needs is practise, I'd like some advice on creating actual melodies.

I've googled it, but there isn't much information on this. I suppose it's just a natural thing you learn as you listen to dark dubstep, as well as the actual bass production itself, but the most I got was that E, F, F sharp and G were good tension notes commonly found.

I'd like a few more tips. Plenty of dubstep songs drop from a beautiful melody into a warping, twisting bassline that is musically completely different yet fits back into the melody lines perfectly when they come back in, and I've found it a struggle to do this - being classically trained it's especially difficult!

Are there methods to get me started or is it just a bit of random experimentation?

Some musical modes are really dark, like Locrian.

Read up on:

The Harmonic Minor Scale (& chords build with it),
The Locrian & Phrygian modes,
Chromatisism,
Diminished & Augmented Chords.

Should help at least give you a basis to work off, the rest is really down to you and what you do with those creatively.
