Whats the differnce between that and dubstep? Any Artist names for comparing?

mount kimbie is an example. its a bit of a stupid name. some call it future garage. also a stupid name. http://futuregarageforum.com/

I dont think its so bad to use the terms to describe whats going on sometimes but I dont think they ever need to be used in the black and white sense of fitting into genres etc.

If you take these descriptions loosely and light hearted they can be helpful rather than putting things into boxes etc.

Just not getting caught up in what is and whats not, is the key.


As for the artists making "post dubstep" I would roughly use this description for anyone that was making "dubstep" but now is making something that doesnt really sound like it, but doesnt really fit anywhere else either. Ramadanman & Addison Groove would be obvious ones. Loefahs DJ sets for instance, whilst obviously just straight jamming house is playing things that is a little bit undefined, yet clearly has branched off from dubstep.

Dont be so concerned with people using the term though, and what "post dubstep" is exactly... its not going to heighten your knowledge or enjoyment of the music at the end of the day.

James Blake, Mount Kimbie, Emika, etc… music claimed by, or originated within the Dubstep genre, but no longer really is… just "electronic music” now, but if you were to look for it, you’d dig around in Dubstep section… lol

no definition bro, i personally don't like labelling everything but it seems inevitable.

generally seems to refer to electronic artists such as mt kimbie, martyn, james blake, ikonika who (i would say) are a bit more experimental.

rather than getting a definition best thing to do would be to check out some artists and get an idea of the sound

I would agree, except that you never see anyone calling any of them "post-dubstep", probably because most people who have heard of them have a less superficial view of dubstep.

It refers to artists who actually just make electronic music with an experimental ethos. 'Post dubstep' give it a rest.

Yeah, that's pretty much it.

More than anything else it's a way of saying "if you got into dubstep because you liked hearing a diverse selection of weird but danceable bass heavy music and are now pissed off that most dubstep nights just consist of the same wobble tune being played 457 times in a row then you might like this instead."

It's kind of a stupid sounding phrase (it's not a genre in any meaningful sense afaict) but it kind of makes sense in the same way that post-punk referred to a whole bunch of independent and mostly unrelated scenes that were kind of spiritual cousins in that they were in some way working in a space that had been opened up by punk...

Kind of a stupid name considering Dubstep is still (in the wider music world) a relativly new genre.

To put it another way, I wouldn't say "he's a post-dubstep producer" or "this is a post dubstep tune" but I might say "they were playing a load of different post-dubstep things". It's more of a common feature of a load of styles than a genre in itself, if that makes sense...

its bullshit. you don't hear people saying post-house, post-electro, post-disco, post-hiphop....but all of a sudden dubstep's dead?

in the world of youtube, soundcloud, itunes....no genre is dead. this isn't 1950, where any cultural elite can control music. post-dubstep is an agenda, and recognize it for exactly what that term suggests..

i don't think that what it means at all. people get all freaked out by labels they don't fully understand. labels are just peoples' attempts to bring order to chaos... to try and group like things together in order to better describe the sort of sound in question. for example: "liquid" drum and bass would conjure up the basic idea of drum and bass that is more fluid and mellow than dark and heavy. If someone says they like liquid drum and bass, you instantly have a general idea of the style and architypal artists they are into. labels are helpful.

"post dubstep" simply means that, whatever the sound in question, it's going to be subject to the influence of dubstep. It also gives you a rough time frame of when the music was produced (sometime after the emergence of the genre dubstep). future garage, for example is simply "post dubstep" garage... it's garage that began being produced after the existence of dubstep and so you might hear a more dubstep influence within it (a lot of it is made at 140 bpm, for example). If i said a certain dubstep artist explores the "post-Burial" realm of dubstep, you would instantly know the sort of dusty crackle and ghostly ambience that that im talking about... i just mean that the artist borrows elements from Burial. very simple and useful. don't get frightened off by the lingo.

it's the same in art for example... they use the term post modern, or post impressionist because the style of some piece of art might borrow from that era of art and it's worth mention as far as describing to somebody it's general style.
