hey guys. i was having a discussion about using ableton to dj with my cousins girlfriend and she was saying she thinks its cheating.

i wanna start playing out soon using ableton but i feel like its more about track selection and creative mixing coz i think thats more exciting than spending the majority of a track trying to sync up the next track.

No matter which way you slice it, DJing is just plain fun.

Try out a few different types of djing at your local store, watch videos of people djing in different ways, and pick whichever tickles your fancy and fits your style.

Ableton opens up a lot of options though, you can DJ, produce, and preform your tracks live. Look into things like the Novation Launchpad, monomes, Livid controllers and mpc's. I'm thinking about getting a custom designed Livid Ohm 64, and using it with Renoise and Traktor. CDJs are getting a bit dry

well i hav had cheap decks in the past and i have used cdj's before so i can dj but because i cant practice regularly on them i dont really wanna play out on cdj's. and its so expensive to buy a cdj set up. and i find it a lot more fun knowing that the tracks are already synced so i can start messing with loops and effects rather than beatmatching

But still, buying Ableton Live and a decent midi controller can easily run you $1000, which is just a little less then what I spent on my CDJ set anyway. Theres really no cheap way around DJing that is quality and will hold up, just gotta suffer the cut a bit until you can gig out and start earning the money back.

another alternative is traktor, check ean golden cue routines

I have been djing with ableton for a little over a year. I really enjoy it because it opens up more room for creativity with the songs. I also use on deck with my set up so I can scratch or throw in some good vinyl whenever I want to. Don't let people saying its cheating change your mind. As long as the crowd enjoys it and you are I don't see why it is so wrong.

I have an apc 40 great controller but it recently took a fell and it needs the board inside replaced.

i have ableton a launchpad and a trigger finger i used to have a set of decks but got bord because there to easy to use so i wanna dj with ableton but iv been working so much on producing i havnt had t=time to pratice with ableton but i know once i will it will be worth it cause you can do sooo much more then a pair of decks

yeah thats it i'm much more interested in production just wanna dj to get my name about a bit. and yeah theres so much more you can do with ableton than with a pair of decks and it isnt as easy as people say you have to spend loads of time preparing the tracks etc

I've always DJ'd with Ableton when I played out and I never got any complaints lol. Yeah, granted of course its easier than CDJs but the disadvantage as I see it is you have to carry a lot of equipment to the venue e.g. laptop, controller and soundcard! Where as if you just use CDJs then you only need to bring CDs and/or memory stick. Its been a while since I played but I just thought about making the tranfer to CDJs 'cause its annoying having to hold onto your laptop etc or keep an eye on it when not playing. And the reality is 99% of venues don't give a fuck if someone steals your equipment and they make no provision for keeping it in a secure place.
