Dubstep concept album

I just recently started writing out the things that go on in my head when I'm making music. They all follow a plot line and a character I created as a kid.
I suggest you read it, it's sortof cool and I've never really explained it so it's an experience to actually write it all out.

I'm not going to explain it but it's introduced in "Ratch the Mechanic" on my soundcloud in the track description.


That's all irrelevant though, my question is:
Has a dubstep concept album ever been thought out and released?
I'm really interested in the genre as a means of story telling more than dancefloor wrecking. it's why I got into the robotic side.

Any responses would be cool.

I'm sure one has but I can't remember who did it...it was someone like Eskmo but I don't think it actually was Eskmo...er...yeah.

Personally whenever I'm putting together a little EP type thing I always make it concept. Otherwise I find it difficult to make the tracks all gel together properly. Plus it's a lot of fun thinking up the themes and keeps the interest going while making it. I have a short attention span and usually get bored of doing an EP after one track and wanna make another genre so sometimes having a storyline can help keep me on track.

Yeah definitely, I didn't think I was the only one or anything, but it's constant through about anything I produce, usually the same characters.

I can't NOT have a concept, I don't remember but one track even got me narrating a night Drive-By in Egypt to a group of friends that came by and were listening.

I figured it had been done before, and I don't figure anyone will want to touch mine, BUT, it's one of the huge things I saw in dubstep that made me want to create it.

Yeah, every IDMForum's Netlabel release has a concept behind it, they arent exclusively dubstep but they all have a direct theme and they feature some awesome producers both dubstep and other.

Those Peppermill Records guys do some shit called 2099, set music to futurist paintings, its a trip, i like it.

It's a trip to me that you mention IDMF because that's where I came here from, not only that but I was pretty regular.

I never checked out their catalog of releases but it sounds like I should have, I always loved the compilations.

Not dubstep, but The Streets second album is a great example of a concept album. Well worth checking out to see how well different songs from an album can integrate with one another and feed into a larger plotline.

I'm currently planning a idm concept album, and I'm not going to touch the buttons until the whole album has been thoroughly realised in the form of a storyboard, much like those used in video production...

And Yeah, I just always had the same characters in my head, and I started thinking of it when I was really young, like when I started thinking, Ratch is an old character for me. I just never really had a method of exploring that world besides drawing, until I got into dubstep. So it's all basically though out, but not in words.

Storyboard could be a lot of fun though especially for this, I really want to get in touch with a skilled animator, it's a colorful world and I want to realize it pretty bad.

Maybe start lurking on Deviantart or some other animation forums... You might spot someone who can collaborate with you...

Or failing that, learn how to use tweening technology to your advantage and animate it yourself...

Some obvious tools to check out are Adobe Flash and Adobe AfterEffects (or Motion/Shake if you're on a Mac

Ahhhhh, I can't wrap my head around computer based art, it just won't happen, so my best bet is Deviant art or somewhere like it, I'll definitely head there and have a peek and pitch the ideas around. Thanks for the ideas man.

Solid! I personally love concept albums, although sometimes they get cheesy (I'm thinking of the Ayreon stuff... Kinda cool, but also kinda cheesy if you think about it... Same with Kamelot, etc.).

My favorite concept album ever has to be ISISs Panopticon, it explores the idea of the panopticon prison idea from back in the day, then forces you to think about that situation, but for everyone in everyday life. It has a central theme, but no overt story line. Similar is the Ocenic album by ISIS. There's an abstract loose storyline, but it mostly explores the concept of water, and life and love. In my mind they're amazing, mostly because of the abstract nature of it, it forces you to think but you end up coming to your own conclusions.

kind of on, and off-topic at the same time - but Linkin Park did a concept album called Reanimation - which was (imo) their best work. Ever. Eskmo of Dubstep fame did on erecently as well called... Hypercolor? I think... beautiful album. Untouchable.

Which probably explains why everyone gets along so well there. It's almost like that's where people go until they pick a genre and it's correlating forum. I don't see many people that stick around there besides the ones that either fit in really well or don't have a place anywhere else.

I do like to go in there and post tracks just because they give really general advice compared to the dubstep specific advice you get here. And there are always loads of good tunes.

I know this is really old, I was just looking for some good examples of some really good concept albums because Im looking in to creating one.. The only dubstep concept album ive heard so far is Nero's Welcome Reality, I think its epic and I would like to find more like it..

If i'm understanding of what a concept album is... Coheed and Cambria have done their albums as like comics. They tell a story. Some albums have sequels. Even like 4 part series. Not EDM but still an interesting way of thinking.
