So I'm mastering a mixdown in ableton 8, I apply the effects I like, sounds good on the headphones and speakers. For some reason after the export alot of the kick sound extremely 'limited' (too much limiter), yet the sounded fine in the programmer with all of the mastering effects on. Any ideas?

i have similar strange things with ableton sometimes.

i use isotope typically for my mastering. my problem is i get weird digital clips and beeps if i just scrub through the track in itunes. if i upload to something like soundcloud though, the hits disappear. i feel it is a dithering problem for mine.

as for your problem, i would make sure it isnt too much limiting or compression. for a test, try to just bounce out the kick and bass or just kick alone to see if it does the same thing by itself. if not then it could be a mix problem. double check you ableton settings as well for export. whats your effect rack and is that on a master channel?

if everything is mixed down, it sounds like effect problems. i steer clear from ableton's eq when mastering cause i never get results i personally like unless doing stuff in the upper end of the spectrum. may just be overall volume mix too.

Are you both running legit versions? Cos I've never had anything weird like that happen for me :\

Amazing how different things can sound after that short break while you wait for it to export.

Had it here many a time (still do!).

I don't know if Ableton has this option but bouncing in realtime on Logic has fixed things like this for me.

yeah its legit.

like i said it is only when i scrub, when i upload to soundcloud or just listen, the problem is gone. its hard to explain and i probably explained it worse than it actually is.

Ok so its seems it is an issue with my mixdown.
Is limiting or compression in my mastering more likely to squash my bass?
Before applying my mastering effects nothing in the track is peaking any higher than -6db

more then likely. especially the sub when limiting. i only limit at the very end. if before mastering everything is that low you should be ok. really watch your outputs. dont worry about mastering. make the mix sound good on all speakers. if its quiet its all good, its just the mix. unless you are playing out with it anytime soon.

Hmm... seems to be adding gain pre-limiter upon export, maybe an audio engine bug, try and update?

Remove the limiter + master bus plugs, bounce out your mix and "self finalize" in a separate session.
