Making sounds

Post by ohplease1 » Wed Apr 20, 2011 8:27 pm

Right.

Been learning to produce for i'd say 6 months now, i don't get as much time as i'd like each day. I started off learning what I thought was most important which was mainly sub bass and drums, i went really in-depth and feel quite confident in my abilities with them.

I then felt that I wanted to learn 1 synth inside out, to get some nice basslines/sounds in my productions. I chose Massive simply because it looked quite user friendly to start off with.

Now, after about of month or so of just playing around with it, i know what everything does within Massive and how it will affect the sound. The problem is, pretty much everything i seem to make in it comes out as being some high pitched, metallic sounding noise and it's really starting to piss me off.

When i listen to music, i like to work out how I think sounds are made, and most of the time i think lfo's are being used (correct me if i'm wrong)? When i add a lfo, or some sort of envelope, thats where i start getting the horrible metallic sounding noises.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice and have been through a similar thing as me? I have looked for youtube tutorials, but with such a silly amount of brostep tutorials, I can't really find any suitable ones.

Incase you wanna know what sorta sounds I try to go for, it's either :
- Dark, slow, dungeon sounds, or
- Aggressive mid range basslines similar to the ones in Metal Mouth, Smash That Badger, Kutz - Wined Up.

Again, any tips/adivce/links would be much appreciated :)

You say you know a lot about drums/sub bass. Can you link me to a few sites and maybe give a few tips on what you know? I suck at drums, and sub bass.

Seriously guys, you must be trollin.......

Sub and drums etc have been covered a million times on here. The stickies at the top of the page will cover 99% of what you are asking about. Give it a read man, some real knowlegable heads have contributed to it so take full advantage!

Plus, you will get flamed by some on here for asking these questions, dont give em the satisfaction.

Mind if I hijack this thread?

I'm good at synthesizing bass, but any leads/pads or anything in the higher frequencies I create just comes out really cheesy.
