fuck...hard drive decided to throw in the towel this morning. all my tunes, all 160GB of them...gone forever.
i guess i can really see what this whole "vinyl" thing is all about.
been nice knowing you, mates. think i'm gonna go shove a fork in the toaster. the suicide note will just read "dubplates, man"....
nah, j/k. but do artists think it's OK to torrent releases that you once paid for, but lost? i'm in a moral quandary here.

Since making music I've had 4 hard drives fail on me. it's the most frustrating thing. Speaking of which might do a backup tonight.
I reckon if you've already bought the tunes then nabbing them illegal is surely OK. juts don't get carried away!

mate thats awful

I've always only ever played vinyl but then I always worry about leaving them next to a radiator or something like that. guess you can never have a fully permenant way of keeping your tracks safe. Been thinking about recording all my records to MP3 just in case the worst was to happen. but then that would take fucking ages

hmm, was just gonna say if i scratch, warp or lose a record i dont go and steal another copy on the principle i paid for one before
but then again i wouldnt expect to lose a whole collection in a oner
unless i had a bag nicked - which doesnt bare thinking about as the vinyl is so hard to find in the first place these days
and i can imagine how horrible an experience that would have been
there's risks attached to all formats i guess

This!
I've been backing up to disc since the 90s. For my own production work, I back up two copy sets and keep them in two places in the case one is destroyed in a fire or something. I've probably burnt 700+ discs in the past decade - it has taken a lot of time (1998 - 2x speed CD burner, I see you), but it's worth it for the peace of mind.
Also, I'm deathly afraid of warping my records with radiators, direct sunlight, etc. In the summer, I used to drive to gigs with my windows rolled up, AC on blast, blankets over top of the crates to keep them out of the light. Has anyone been stupid enough to DJ at a barbecue without the aide of a tent? I had 12"'s warping while they were playing on the decks - that shit is real. Any format can be destroyed, nothing will last forever.

Barbecued 12"s are not the one
Playing outside in Summer is the greatest but presents its own dangers, windy sunny days blowing the needle about - also not the one

I had one of those, too. I remember being "the person" to go to if you wanted a CD burned, because so few people had them. Now every laptop you buy has a CD/DVD burner.
The times, they are a changin'....

what actually happened? Ive done recoveries in the past on HD's and manage to recover large parts of them using dos recovery software.

Oh boy, I can feel your pain, this must be so frustrating... atm I have 2 external hdds, but I'll get a third one sooner or later, I've become somewhat overcautious concerning my music collection
