whats up everyone.

was wondering if anyone has any tips for getting a bass sound similiar to the ones from these tracks:

Soundcloud

drop is at 54 seconds for both tracks

i know theres the basics involved like resampling, distorting to shit, compression, underlying subs, layering, and spreading voices. but does anyone have any extra information on this? im mostly after the punch and impact of these basses that mid range bass almost always seems to lack.

i have read up alot on not just this, but a lot of other forums, so sorry if this seems like just another "how do i make this bass" thread, but i really think this warrants a thread for discussion. better than a "how do i make my bass YOI like skrillex?" thread right? :D

anyway thanks for reading, looking forward to any responses.

cheers,

hans from tokyo

o_O wow, that post needs to be deleted.. jeebus...
Vis-á-vis Culprates tings I was trying to figure out a while ago. Mostly its just tweaking the shit out of reeces and ridiculous re-sampling.
Getting the punch from the bass is all about making sure your drums (mostly kicks) work well with your bass. So that they compliment each other instead of fighting for space.
And also just having really phat drums... but thats just practice.
Have a chat with Gravity on the forum, he is a good mate of Culprates. I'm sure you can get his AIM somewhere and ask him yourself maybe?

Another way to get punch (along with what you've already stated), is to have a sharp attack and short decay, with a slightly lower sustain envelope. This gives the bass an initial "hit" and then drops off slightly for the rest of the note. If you match the attack with your kick, you get a really nice unison with them both hitting really hard :)

PS - Koan sound is brilliant.

I can say that their favorite synth is Malstrom in Reason... twiddle those knobs :W:

i might be wrong, but from alot of cuplrate tunes it sounds as if hes big into granular synthesis and is layering granular samples on top of his bass sounds for the extra movement

cuplrate said on his song call it what you want, its a bass made in maelstrom with squares and he made it in reason 5 and sequenced in ableton

I'd try heavily distorting and resampling reeses.

Sorry for the vague answer. :l

yeah actually i was reading up on some DOA threads and came across polymasses granular synthesis resampling tutorials and the results sounded a LOT like what the dubsaw guys are doing. i think he said he granulized a sample of a seal growling, then layered that with his reese +sub. im still trying to get the technique down but it seems pretty promising.

i stopped using reason since i got logic, but maybe ill open up reason 4 and see what i can come up with.

THANK YOU to everyone for all the replies. that one about the decay time was really interesting, will definitely try that out. If anyone has any more suggestions please share! :Q:

Try something like reece + little bitcrusher + distortion + big phaser.
I think the key is the processing before the phazer/chorus/flanger stuffs

I would recommend a notch with crazy automation

This.

Also, a few notches, one stacked on top of the other, all automating separately can create some crazy, twisting goodness :D
