I need a simple "on the go" MIDI writing program?

Hey all!
First post!
And before I begin, I wanna say to all of you...I've been browsing these forums for some months now, and all I've gotta say is quality, quality, QUALITY! Keep up the good work on this awesome site filled with tons of information.
So, my request is simple. I'm looking for a (preferably free) Windows program which allows me to quickly make MIDIs. I plan on taking this program with me to school to avoid parts of the boring lectures.
All I need is the ability to quickly make a MIDI drum track, and a bunch of easy MIDI synth tracks so I can come home and throw it into my DAW!
Anyone got any suggestions?
