Only the top is 'strict' stoner, but strictness and blinkers are for gowls.

Alice in Chains are Grunge. Also love the Melvins, they were basically the band to start sludge.

Pretty much. It first started with Kyuss and went off from there. Probably my favourite genre apart from Dubstep.
From the most reliable source on the internet (wiki):
The progenitors of stoner rock, like their followers today, often share the characteristic that they and their audience are "stoners," recreational users of cannabis. While it would be grossly inaccurate to describe all fans and performers of stoner rock as marijuana users, some may find that the effects of marijuana and the down-tuned, slow, and psychedelic riffs of stoner rock complement one another — which eventually led to the common usage of the term "stoner rock" or "stoner metal" to define the genre.
Saw those guys a month ago... Shit was slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow.
And amazing.
And Alice in Chains are great to blitz out to. Grunge? Is that really a valid term? Thought it was just a fashion fad. Don't really see much of a connection between Nirvana/AiC/Soungarden myself, apart from guitars and heroin...
Sweet, deadly heroin...
