When i turn up the monitors half way to even a decent monitoring level the upstairs neighbours start banging on the floor.
From the written complaints it's the bass coming from the soundsystem.
The speakers are close to the wall which i fear is part of the problem (because the rockit 8 are huge).
I have thin sheet of acoustic foam under them.

So far i'm thinking of downgrading monitors (dont really want to though), putting more foam under the speakers, hanging duvet or something behind the speakers. )
Any tips on this would be awesome because i am close to eviction.

Buy lots of rockwool and put it in the corners of your room. It will help but won't fix the issue. Even with it I'm on a final warning from the police but it's much better than nothing and hopefully your neighbors are more tolerant than mine.

do have the money to soundproof your room
(and is it an apartment if it is r u aloud to modify the room)

that's the best way to test sub bass.
how well does it go through your roommates wall and vibrate the shit out of it.

There's no quick and easy way. Have a look at this thread and scroll down to Paradigm X replies.

Get the speakers as far as you can from the walls and put a filter on your master to EQ out the very low end when you're composing or experimenting.
Also, talk to your neighbours to know their working schedule, etc so you know when you have to care or not (try not to sound like you're gonna sack the place when they're out )

If you decide to downgrade, I'll gladly trade my Rokits 6 with yours

i have the 8's aswell and never had an issue, maybe you are just cranking it too loud. also do you have your speakers on stands or on your desk?

Yeah i've given up on making a racket. In the old graff house I used to live in it was wonderful. No one who lived there gave a fuck because I was just drowning out someone else's eminem cd anyway and the neighbours were frightened of us and never said shit.

Now i'm in a small old apartment with people all around me and I don't want to be THAT guy that everyone is sick of (there are some hipsters in a two piece acoustic band that try to play music but the singer just goes up and down wailing fifths and everyone is very fucking tired of it) so I went and got some decent monitor headphones and only reference in my stereo (it's crap anyway - no adjustable eq but my folks got it for me when I was younger so I still loves it)

Will do, So far having them away from the wall has stopped the upstairs folk from stomping on the floor. They're big so it's not ideal. I'm selling them right now and probably picking up Yamaha HS50M's as i have heard good things about em. I figure i can turn the tunes up louder then since the bass won't be as heavy like it is with the 8 inch RKT on even lower volumes.

The room i have is a acoustic mess in general. Was checking out how some DIY videos today on youtube on how to build acoustic panels and bass traps. Doesn't look too expensive or difficult and should make a nice difference.

not too sure rockwool will do much. Definitely invest in it tho if you're looking to improve monitoring
its not really for isolating.. unless you plan on getting A LOT
It will tighten up the sound in your room.. probably dampen it a tad, but don't think you'll be sound proofing a room with $150-$200 in rockwool.

Buy a pair of headphones.

Speak to your neighbours like they're people and not the tnucs from downstairs or w/e...

Just be like "Look I make music, I know you're not happy about the noise so I bought some headphones.. I have to pre-warn I will be using my speakers to test out tracks like once a week or so, would you be alright with this?".

If you're living in a crowded place (like with neighbours) you gotta sacrifice.

If they're still being knobs after you speak to them...No sound proofing will stop then being one.

Stands will help, don't have the speakers touching solid floor or walls, and try and be reasonable... we all like to crank it once in a while (tinnitus being my proof of this) but sometimes it just isn't possible... I have two small daughters who go to bed early eve, and my studio is just down the hall from them. I can't have it too loud, but it doesn't stop me using my monitors properly. Set your workspace up so the speakers are as close as possible to you without being intrusive while you are working. I have headphones for when the missus goes to bed though

Headphones aren't particularly great for working on the detail of tracks but you can make broad strokes if you know what I mean.

Most of it is common sense really, but if you are being reasonable then you should perhaps as Legend4ry said you should talk to them. I know that our particular taste of music is not appreciated by the vast majority, understandable some may say, and so more than just loud music it is loud and obnoxious/heavy depending on your taste! Explain to them that you produce music, that you don't want to disturb anyone and would appreciate it if they could help find a level you are all comfortable with. When I was younger, every new place I moved into the first thing I did was go around the neighbours, introduce myself and say 'by the way, I am a DJ and so play music regularly. It is drum and bass so it does have a tendancy to travel, please let me know if it is bothering you at all as I don't want to disturb anyone while I practice'. Everyone was cool, and the only complaint I ever got was when I had a bad day at work, got back and whacked the stereo on full, which was dumb and I took full responsibility for. Nothing to do with DJ-ing though. Most people are normal, rational types who just want a reasonably quiet life. Work with them, and you may find your problem disappears fairly quickly.

Tell them youve bought thousands of pounds worth of soundproofing in an effort to not disturb them. Then just turn them down a smidge.
