Need a job.

Post by DRTY » Sun May 08, 2011 6:52 pm

I need a job, but don't know what to do! I'm not qualified in anything (useful) but have experience in a few areas.

Looking about all I see is fucking sales jobs, which worst comes to worse I'll do, but I hate it. Get my local jobs paper every week, always looking out online, and occasionally walk through town looking, but it's always the same old sales stuff that seems to be going.

Anyone got any wonderful suggestions? What do you do?

Get a bar job.

Staff turnover is high and they expect people to leave when something better comes along.

Yeah have thought about that, and done it before but I wouldn't be able to work weekends, I don't think any bar would wanna employ someone who cant work weekends.

EDIT - I mean I've thought about bar work not full time benefits

Doing something active. I can't see the appeal of standing around in a shop or sitting in an office all day.

Do some gardening or something. Something that keeps you moving and gives you at least moderate exercise.

Yeah, but it's still indoors and very restricted.

I worked in a shop for a few months and there was a fair bit of stuff to do, but there was also a lot of just standing around doing nothing.

Utterly tedious either way.

Could look into landscaping or something like that.

Painting and decorating could be alright too.

what you reckon I could do that straight up? Surely I'd need to go to get some sort of qualification for that?

Landscaping?

Not sure. You can do courses in it but I know a couple of people who do it and I don't think they did any sort of course. I think they were trained on the job.

I'll ask my mate about it. You could be right.

Depends, get a career development loan and go to horticutural college for a year, or ring up landscaping companies and learn on the job, offer to work for bellow the odds (like £30 a day or summit cash in hand) for a while, then you've at least got a reference/experience when applying for one.

But no you don't need a qualification for trades if you do private jobs, you just need to know what your doing.

I often wonder about this as well. I just cant picture a painter and decorator being turned away from job because they don't have their qualification certificate or whatever it is you get..It may be the case if you apply for a job within a firm but if your doing odd jobs around town, self employed then I'm sure you'd be fine.

Don't be a painter or a decorator, it's at the bottom of the pile of the 'Blue collar' trades.
Depending on your age if your still fairly young and want a Career instead of just a job then go for an Apprenticeship in something. If you want job security for life then do an Electrical apprenticeship at a big company, learn about PLC's etc. Once you have finished then you can go anywhere you like and apply your skills to any thing. I did Mechanical and I hated it at first but at the end of the day you have to be realistic and get off your arse and out of limbo and just do something, you will eventually grow to like it, especially if it is skilled imo.

go to your local Job Centre, and sign up for jsa and get them to put you on a course in something.
not only do they bump your weekly pay to £70's, but they'll put you on a free course (usually something like building/gardening)
where after that, i'm sure a bossman will hire you.

Alternativly jump into the computer world (if you think you're fairly good) just coz it's 'TECHNICHAAANN' doesn't mean fuck i need to know the in's and outs of a computer, coz sometimes they teach you.

what do you recon jobwise you would be best suited for ?

My english teacher gave me a weird look when I mentioned that as the musical instrument I played. Like the wtf stare. I had to give her the 'wiki wiki' dj motion to confirm what i meant.
