Roots reggae

Just listened to Augustus Pablo's "Dubbing in africa" with sly & robbie and suddenly found myself interested; how many proper roots fans are out there? Slap your favourite producer down on the thread, or just ramble about how bass quakingly great you think it is as a genre.
Its a hard one for me in terms of top producers, it could be either the newer stuff like rhythm and sound or smith & mighty, but then again you cant denie the majesty of the orignator, King tubby.
In terms of sound system weight you also can miss Jah shaka and Jah tubby, the list goes on....

i was once like you, wondering why all my brother listened to was roots.
now i know:the library is so expansive; so many versions of songs, the creativity of dub, and emotion behind the songs, and if you throw in 'coxsone sound' and early soundsystems like that, you can see where most of the music we listen to today came from. so right now, other than dubstep, i'm just collecting roots records.

I've been a big reggae fan for the last 10 years or so..my main introduction was through the Blood and Fire reissues, and from there I've dug around a lot more..
recently i've been getting more and more into dub, starting to pick up the classics..also trying to pick out some of the better 80's dancehall..i don't particularly care much for modern reggae, i miss the roughness and feel of the 60s/70's outout, although there is good stuff still being released..
finally managed to see burning spear recently, and the skatalites, which were both amazing..
a quick few tunes i'm feeling at the moment:
Half Pint - Greetings
Leroy Smart - Mr Smart
Burning Spear - Invasion
Fisherman Style 7's
Jackie Mittoo - Drum Song
Welton Irie - Ghettoman Corner
Striaght To The Head (new Pressure Sounds comp - awesonm rare 7s collection)
Calcing Bubbles Cameron - Ep 2 (Honest Jons - ex Light of Saba trombone player - pure nyabinghi styles)
Johnny Osbourne - Purify You Heart
Little Roy - Tribal War

I love roots man!!!
Pretty much live off it! Barry Brown is a favorite and Horace Andy. Totally agree with The King Tubby thing as well. The originator. I still get serverely blown away by the flow of his dubs. TOTAL FUCKIN GENIUS!!

I'm into the older stuff... Tubby, Scientist, Aggrovators etc... but new school digidub stuff doesn't really interest me. They seem to have killed the original spirit of the music... Iration Steppas might be an exception - seeing them live is pretty special. I think dubstep producers should stay away from imitating digidub too... most of the time I don't think it works.

ive always sort of been into reggae never really bought much or dug into too much until i started going subdub..i remember first time i heard the mighty iration steppas system i couldn't breathe over past month or so ive prob been listenin 2 more dub than i have dubstep.listenin to the dubhead vol 3 album right now.
guess reason i like dub so much is same reason as i love dubstep...the modd and the vibe of music and of course the pure sub bass.

Big props to HUGE for those sites, clued me up some things iv been wondering on for awhile, muchly apreciated.
Agree with Clone AK as well, all good music in my eyes comes from roots. All dance really started off from dead early hip hop, which was instigated when kool keith brought the idea of sound system parties over from jamaica. Although you can trace a deeper lineage between decent modern music and the irresitable soul of roots than that im sure.
Dont quite no what you mean by "i was once like you, wondering why all my brother listened to was roots" though mate.
Kinda thought the idea of this thread was everyone collectivley saying there reggae heads.
But heck, im probably just high

Yeah anything with scientist involved i always felt were heavyweight affairs.
"wins the world cup" is gold but i think "Scientist vs Prince jammy at king tubbys house; the big showdown" wins over for me. Jah thomas doing the toasting, the roots radics (i know they play on nearly everything but i reckon thats with good cause) and the production is quitessential dubwise.

ther's some amazing stuff on on-u sound but there's also some failed experimentation and soulless digidub so listen first (if you can find it in the first place)
i remember a tune called dedward the flying preacher thats heavy and mixes with dubstep
obviously scientist and king tubby
some augustus pablo stuff and Gregory Isaacs Slum in Dub is also thick in vibe
