lolita - nabakov - this is a definite. feels a bit wrong reading (its basically the mind of a paedophile trying to justify himself) but its really beautifully written and very interesting!

after On The Road, make sure you read Dharma Bums then Big Sur. Then read Dr. Sax then Town & City then read Satori in Paris. just read every book he ever wrote.

Just read Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks which I highly recommend. Also Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides is amazing.

Oh! and Kill Your Friends by John Niven is awesome. It's a bit like American Psycho, but set in the late 90s UK music industry. It's written by an ex A&R man and takes quite a scathing, satirical look at the music industry. It's also absolutely hilarious.

In a vaguely similar sort of vein -

William Burroughs - Naked Lunch and Junky
Joseph Heller - Catch 22
JG Ballard - Crash, Drowned World and the short story collections
Alasdair Gray - Lanark
Tom Wolfe - The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test
James Kelman An Old Pub Near the Angel

i was obsessed with irvine welsh when i was 18/19 read nearly everything by him.

have to say that 'porno' was my favourite, its actually a proper novel, instead of just weird disconnected short stories.

I didn't see House of Leaves mentioned, it's kind of a strange read, but by far my favorite book. I read an interview with danielewski and apparently it took him almost 10 years to finish it. Unbelievably good read IMO.
