half step sets / Loefah

Post by farmaz » Wed May 09, 2007 12:19 pm

gotta forgive me my dubstep knowledge aint as sharp as some on here :|

I read it was loefah who started the "half step" sound, as much as the DMZ tunes like neverland, anti war dub etc are great tunes i find there is a certian "vibe" on tunes like loefah's horror show, i really cant get into the faster dubstep tunes.

anyone know of any pure half-step sets?.......

also a discog of loefah tunes would be great too

thanx :D

also i forgot anybody know if ASBO records ever did anything more than a few dubplate cuts, heard a tune dropped by plastician a few months ago, imo there sound was "pure dubstep" if that is such a thing.

No releases yet, but I'm sure there is more to come from ASBO.

Look for the Youngsta Live @ FWD>> CD for a snapshot of halfstep evolving in the Horror Show-era. "Minus degree!!!"

From Bristol, check Headhunter and HENCH people (Komanazmuk, Wedge, Whiteboi, Jakes etc)

Check some youngsta sets too. He plays some of that style.

YOu might be doing well to find many "all halfstep" type sets though!

Why is that?........there cant be just a single person (i.e. me) that loves skunked out dubby half step, i throught this dubstep was born outta Jah shaka, king tubby, Mr Pablo sound i mean slow skanky beats with solid 40hz bass or maybe i need some BLack Ops crew cd's

there was a bit of a backlash against the dominance of that sound last year, and now the pendulum has swung very far in the other direction

also check the releases on Keysound, particularly Blackdown - Lata

feel the halfstep backlash!

I just hope the movers and shakers dont get too involved in thinking about what rhythm they are using "at the moment" and just keep making good dubs.

for what reason was there a backlash?

i allways been into bass & when i found dubstep imo it was the perfect music, i allways had a massive love of dub reggae when it was done right i.e. nuff echo chamber & solid bass loefah i found allways seemed to drop the tunes i really could skank out to in my flat lol. now i hear these tunes that have gotta be closer to d&b speed which to me aint "DUB"

Nope. It evolved out of the darker 2-step garage. The dub in dubstep doesn't literally refer to dub reggae in itself but more to a certain kind of aesthetic or production technique. It was a reference to the way producers hollowed out the original 2-step template, creating a greater sense of space

I think you are kind of taking the "dub" thing a bit too "reggae" mate, dont mean to be be partronising in the slightest.. Dubstep evolved from the tunes just being "dubs" as opposed to beats to rap/sing over as far as Im aware, as opposed to it being a mixture of dub reggae and anything else.. although there are comparisions, but only as much as there is with say, Jungle..

I reckon there was a backlash because it started becoming a little stale. Its hard to envisage anybody making a better half-step tune than any of Loefah's finest. Sonically its been pushed as far as it can on the whole and I completely commend producers for varying it up again with the re-introduction of 2-step swing and some 4x4 beats. I personally love dubstep because its still FWD thinking. I don't want it to really be defined as anything, other than bass heavy music around about 140bpm. Once it starts settling into one kinda sound (wobble bass, for example), its fucked IMO

i hang my head in shame

at least i got an education, when my mates ask me "whats this music" i can tell em right insted of being under the mind set it came from king tubby etc.......

thats what killed jungle for me, used to love the sounds of remarc, bizzy b, soundmurderer etc with the ragga/amen mash up, then dicks like Gen dub came along and imo single handed killed d&b (kinda off topic  )

No, its a fair point. A lot of ppl on the forum came from a d&b background and i think a good proportion (although by no means all) would agree that something went horribly wrong at some point. Its worth keeping in mind and trying (as much as anyone can) from letting dubstep falling into the same traps.

on that topic though, i think you'd be giving g dub a little more praise than he deserves in the whole 'killing drum and bass' thing. there's more than a few important steps in that ten year gap you've left out that changed what we think of as the dnb scene...no?

we of the dubstep world would be in a very precarious position if genres like early 90s jungle could suddenly morph into overproduced cheesey uber-jump up drum and bass just because of the will of a single post-2000 producer...
