EASY HIGHPASS QUESTION.

Post by kingnaya » Wed May 25, 2011 2:26 pm

if i make a dutty synth an wanna put my sub in underneath. whats a good hz too highpass it at. dnt wanna lose alot of the warmth and the mids but dont want it too muddy. is there an ideal cut off point??? and alot of my oldschool basses feel like they havnt got alot of subbby subb. so shud i highpass dem and stick a sub in aswel or just eq the low ends higher (makes it soudn muddy sumtymes)

about 80 works for me. 12db slope. maybe higher, around 90, and sometimes maybe lower around 75 but with a 24db slope sometimes if it's leaving too much bass.

lol a lot of approximations. u just gotta try it out and check it on a system with a sub.

For me the sub never usually goes over 150Hz and the other sounds never-ever go below 150Hz, with the exception of the kick drum. I prefer to leave the majority of the low mids free for other instruments so I cut off the high pass quite high. It's very subjective though and depends what sound you want, anywhere between 150Hz and around 2kHz. Try soloing the sub and synth raising the frequency of the HP until it's obvious that it's filtered. You can always equalise some of the low mids out without losing them altogether.

Those old basses....try the HP filter thing but instead of adding any random sub try adding the same sound playing the same notes an octave lower, with a low pass filter set to 100Hz and boost 40-80 Hz.

really depends on the key of the song man. start w/ the fundamental and roll it off from there. I try not to cut my subs too sharp, lest you build up odd resonances- 12-24db/octave can make it smooth. then hipass the other element accordingly.

if i've got an element that i want to turn into a sub, but it's not very clean in the low end, sometimes hipassing it and synthesizing a "fake" low end out of a subbass generator (hware or plugin) can work. i do it on tabla a bunch.

yeah, for me it ranges a bit, but generally:

40hz to ~75hz sub is the sub. ~75-100 is the kick, highpass the bass around 100 with a scoop around 250-300hz. however, this is just approximate, check out your spectrum analyzer and see where things are peaking, and adjust your filters accordingly... play with it until you're happy with it - which is all that really matters.

High-pass leaving room for your kick drum. Low-pass your sub just below the kick drum too. Unless your into side-chaining.

I usually highpass most things to 120hz even if I can't hear anything below that. No real reason for most things to sit under there besides sub bass.
