You know, I used to be a huge metal head. I used to hold the belief that no genre of music was better than metal. I had long hair. I was snobby. Fast forward to nowadays; I'm in my early 20's, I listen to pretty much every style of music I can get my ears on. I recently discovered dubstep from a friend and instantly fell in love. The basslines were brutal like death metal, yet somehow they were laid back like oldschool hip hop. It was a match made in heaven.

Moving on a bit; I've been told that the dubstep I like isn't "real dubstep". I listen to artists like Datsik, Skrillex, Excision, Dr. P, Caspa, etc. I love.. LOVE the brutal, heavy robotic growls; but I also prefer when they're intermingled with melody. What I'm getting at is.. I used to be a death metal snob and say things like "Suicide Silence isn't real metal; it's gay wannabe new wave shit". Now it looks like the tables have turned; as I've been spoken down to a number of times for enjoying Skrillex and "robot noises". I just thought that was kinda funny

As long as there is melody involved as well, what's REALLY wrong with robot noises thrown in to make the music intense? It's like Opeth to me. They have some real brutal, atonal stuff going on; but it's COMBINED with beautiful melodies and they end up complimenting one another wonderfully. This is how I look at artists like Skrillex and Datsik. I dunno, just venting. Thanks for listening if you read this! Feel free to weigh in.

Sorry, man. I'm not a "regular" around here, but I'd like to be. I figured I'd share some views. This wasn't meant to annoy anybody/start shit. Everyone's different. I'm aware of the search filter and how it works, I just wanted to share a personal experience because I now see how annoying it is to be on the other side of the music snob experience.

a lot of people dont like it because it is not the sound they got into. Look at the dubstep 101 thread at the top of the page and see how different those tunes are to the robot ones. There is plenty of people who like those robot sounds but here it is mostly focused on the original sort of sounds.
Your gonna get a lot of haters but tbh just listen to what you like.

edit* i would really recommend at least trying to listen to some of the stuff in that thread. Amazing how many people get converted and even if you dont youwill at least have some knowledge of it unlike a lot of people saying they are into dubstep

He's not going to get haters because he isn't calling "true" dubstep shit and boring like most of the "brosteppers". I think it's cool that people can listen to both sounds, I personally can't stand artists like Skrillex and Doctor P because I don't like their sound (but that's just me).

No no, I understand. It's just that we get these kind of threads like twice a day now and having these discussions all the time just becomes tiring because they're solving absolutely nothing.

I can understand that you like this type of music (no, not calling it Dubstep) because you have a history with metal, but the majority on here will still tell you that it's not true Dubstep and that it sounds like shit basically (me included).
I think the reason why most of us hate it is because all these hipsters nowadays are calling themselves Dubsteppers and saying that they just LOVE Dubstep while they are only listening to the producers that you listed above and haven't got a fucking clue of the history and roots of the genre.

But I'm gonna stop now, I've said this about a million times and I know from my experiences that it doesn't change anything. We just have to deal with it I guess...

And like I said, I TOTALLY understand! I've been there. You know how many times I've sighed and rolled my eyes when some emo kid with a Trivium shirt on told me he liked death metal? I'd shove Entombed and Carcass down his throat and laugh at him. Thanks for being at least nice about it!

I have a friend who listens to "real" dubstep, and I like both genres. One seems more for chilling out to, however. Like, I like to smoke a bowl and kick back to some more "mellow" dubstep; but I also like to get shitfaced and dance to the heavy stuff. To each their own, that's what makes the world interesting. I plan to expand my knowledge of this genre tenfold in the coming weeks, so expect some new posts!

I understand where you're coming from mate, I used to be into my metal from a more hardcore side like parkway drive, your demise etc and found out about dubstep through rusko, caspa and all that but very quickly became bored of the robot farts and went back to metal. then i discovered the deeper side of dubstep and don't listen to metal at all.
Tbh I've always thought there's a big connection between the datsik kind of dubstep and metal and people have just said im an idiot, but nowadays imo liking doctor p/excision or whatever is kinda like the new fad, like emo was a couple of years ago

But in response to the thread title, it is mainly because it is the same noise(s) used over and over by so many different people that it could be one person with a million different aliases. Why not come up with a different sound or something new? Maybe if there wasnt so much repetition more people would be willing to give it more of a chance.

doctor p isnt even filthy though his tunes are just annoying, i can understand people liking skrillex and datsik and noisia, hell even i love noisia!, cos they have those real gritty basslines, but doctor p! is just screech!

Noisia are sick! Some of the best producers/engineers in any genre IMO. I always play their D&B, haven't gotten into their breaks/dubstep much TBH.

And to the original poster, good for you for wanting to get into the scene more and being open to new sounds! A lot of people I know who claim to be "dubsteppers" have no interest whatsoever in getting to know the roots of the sound. I personally don't particularly like "YOI" noises - that shit is so overdone - but I do love well-produced jump-up. Check labels like HENCH (the newly released mixtape is a good place to start), and DJs like N-Type and Plastician. They play jump-up but it's quite varied and keeps me interested. Whereas someone like Liquid Stranger - who I saw live once and he bored me to tears - plays stuff that is stale and bland IMO.

Skrillex is awful

If you want some really good aggressive dubstep, check out Vex'd (mainly their first album "Degenerate", listen to it on a serious system for some brilliant, hardhitting dubstep thats hard yet atmospheric and intelligently made), Broken Note (Their "Terminal Static" album almost sounds like metal in places). Milanese and a few others im not too familiar with.

This topic has been done to death, but those artists you mentioned just use really loud obnoxius mid range patterns over a generic drum loop and thats it. Its basically just, find the 'filthiest', most fucked up sounds and put them all together in 4 second bursts. EVERY song sounds like that to me, and i dont even hate it as much as other people do. Once you've heard a handful of songs from those artists, you've heard them all, theres nothing else to it than that, their just all trying to get the 'filthiest' sounds.

Seriously, check out Vex'd "Degenerate" album and Broken Note "Terminal Static" album. Great albums that are more than annoying midrange sounds.

its all a matter of perception bro, aint no 'true dubstep' or 'fake dubstep', and the end of the day you're gonna like what you're gonna like. dont stop listening to the artists you like just cause some snobs on this board told you they aren't 'real dubstep'. I'll be the first to admit that im not the hugest fan of some of the artists you listed but if thats who you like then more power to you, aint nothing wrong with that. the most we can do is offer you suggestions on similar artist. that being said, check out the HENCH label, they're putting out some of the best aggressive stuff at the moment imo. if you're looking for something a bit different check out swamp81, night slugs, hessle audio.

people hate the robot noises because so many artists tend to try and emulate that sound, and after awhile it gets played out. people dont want to hear the same power drill noises all day, especially in a genre that began as a big melting pot of different styles and genres. alot of the purists were attracted to this genre because there were so many different styles within it, you could find whatever you were looking for in dubstep (which i still believe you can), so it can be a tad bit annoying to see the masses flock to the more aggressive sound. but like i said, people are gonna like what they like and that shouldn't stop any producer/DJ/listener/promoter from doin what they wanna do

Oh, there's melody involved alright...the problem with a melody in a skrillex tune is that it's not beautiful, but actually so all over the map that it ends up sounding like shit. That's the problem with the beats in his tunes too...in the process of trying to be as filthy as possible, the beats are so all over the place that it sounds like shit. There's so much better aggro tunes out there. IMO.

But whatever....wall of death and stuff...

no one is hating. it just gets annoying that somehow the word 'dubstep' is reduced to mean throwaway shock-value noise...
i mean, fuck, i like some of the new tearout...love some of the older tearout... but when people go out to a dubstep dance night and cant stand to hear anymore of it when they leave at 3am ....... i think something is going wrong there.... all the good dances ive been to, regardless of genre, i've left wanting more
