i dont really use ableton, so i dont know what redox is, but just make some standard synth/drum/whatever sounds, feed them through a bitcrusher and play around with it.
also try chip 32. its free 8 bit synth:

theres a bunch of other free vst's you can search for: Magical8bitplug for nes sounds, ymvst for atari sounds, a bunch of others. just google chiptune and you'll find everything you need to know about 8 bit sounds. heres another link:

my favorite way, though, is sampling a gameboy.
do a google search for "chipsound" and youll find everything you need to know.

plenty of freeware vsts but they just don't do chip sound justice, especially when it's cheap as hell to use the real deal

8 bit emulators. chiptune plugs like some stuff from TAL can get you that sound. or just bitcrush some of your synths I suppose

Redux is what Ableton calls its bitcrusher, and basically, thats the tool you should be using to make 8-bit.
8-bit = 24bit massive sound reduced to 8-bit
Redux = Bit-reducer thingy
I suppose some bitcrushers sound different to others (although theoretically they should all sound the same) so if you don't like redux's sound then you can go look for a free vst.

bitcrusher FTW. what I would do to really get that 8-bit sound is to actually bring it down to 4-bit and mess with the downsampling. really brings out that 8-bit sound

Is this true? I love slug's synths, 8 or more bits

4-bits sound more like 8-bits than 8-bits?
