Oh no, another brostep thread....

Post by snypadub » Sat May 28, 2011 12:02 am

........Well kind of.

Just looked at that thread with the new guy's footage of some skrillex gig and it really made me think.
I am usually one for letting everyone like their own thing and not get involved in this whole brostep over dubstep debate but that skrillex thing scares me a lot.

I love bass music, from dubstep as it's supposed to be through dub through house/uk funky through hip hop through pretty much anything with an emphasis on the type of bassweight we get out of sound system culture. I really love it. I just avoided brostep as it was easier than getting angry.

What i realised watching that vid however, was how massive the venue was. I was looking at all the people and thinking how much money was involved. Money is dangerous and, unfortunately bass heads, the money is with that shitty music.

The implications of this are big, really big. We see brostep overtaking real dubstep in popularity because all these producers want a piece of the money pie.

Don't wanna cause controversy by bringing that whole skream at dmz thing up but it is a good example: skream is a killer producer with tonnes of talent but, recently, he really pushes this kind of style and I am willing to bet it is for the same reasons as skrillex and all the other guys. It is a cash cow.

This is going to lead to an oversaturation of brostep (actually, it HAS lead to it) and ever decreasing exposure to those artists sticking to their guns and producing brilliant music.

Some people will argue that its all about progression and that's why people like skream are doing what they do. I agree with progression, it is a really good thing, it keeps life varied and exciting but, this isn't the right kind of progression.
I am going to use a few examples of progression with out desecrated integrity:

Loefah: He felt that dubstep wasn't working for him like it used to and wanted to switch things up and, with that in mind, formulated one of the most forward thinking record labels of recent times. This label pushes new, innovative music but still retains that same basic element that got us all hooked on these sounds in the first place, the output is all still driven by real bassweight.

I have no idea how the current situation can be turned round but, frankly, i'm scared we'll loose the good stuff because artists won't be able to compete with the cashcow bandwagoners.

TL:DR? ffs, you're on a forum driven, primarily by text, start reading things.

No hate here, just good honest discussion.
Love to everyone.
Bass music lover since day dot.

It's late and i'm about to go to sleep, so this is a very dumbed down and possibly incorrect view of the situation.

Kids are the people that listen to 'brostep'. They love the energy of the tunes and all the noises all over the place. It reflects their raging hormones. They are immature, and I am in no way using that term in a derogatory sense, they are simply not fully developed. Kids need something, a sound, a movement, that speaks to them - something they can belong to. If 'brostep' does it for them, then all power to them, I say.

What does this mean? Well,it means that lots of money is being spent on music, DJ equipment and nights involving 'brostep', and by extension, Dubstep. (I don't really like distinguishing, but for the sake of this discussion....)

What is likely to happen?
I reckon, as some these kids get a bit older, their hormones calm down a tad and they gain a bit more life/musical experience, they will realise that the tunes they liked were a bit poo and go in search of the '''''''deeper'''''' stuff.

tl;dr

brostep->pocket money->maturity->dubstep->profit

Anyway, there is a ton of utterly amazing Dubstep coming out atm. People worrying about it's future slightly perplexes me.

*Disclaimer*
I in no way set out to offend anyone. Sorry if I did. Just everyone enjoy whatever you enjoy.

just what darkside said in his GD interview with tunnidge, i hope ure right man but i cant see it, lets not forget it aint 'dubstep' they love its basically pop music, most these younguns i meet aint there for the love of the genre they just there to go tits, fair enough i spose, but na they wont go searchin for the deeper sound in my opion. Think they will just drop it and move on. Ure right about the releases atm, stuuuupid, and i hope ure right about its future. lets just hope the original sound will live on

I agree and disagree, I can completely see where your coming from, but to me, I think Dubstep and 'Brostep' is aimed at completely different audiences.
When I first started getting into the sound, I was hooked on the midrange sounds of Distance,Caspa, Rusko, Sub Soldiers/Dub Police etc. Like most people, when hearing something new you go on the internet and look up more tracks similar, I headed to youtube, searched, enjoyed and was happy listening to tracks on there, It toke me like 4 months to buy my first dubstep release. (I didnt torrent before, simply on youtube). I knew about Loefah, Mala, DMZ etc etc etc, but never really got into them properly because I listened over youtube and didnt get the full power from tracks such as Mud & Goat Stare, so wasn't interested in buying a turntable just to play a couple loefah tracks. A couple months after that, a get a decent pair of monitors with a weighty sub, and boom, Im all over the deeper side of dubstep and still like the decent midrange but off Excision etc completely. Im still looking for a copy of Goat Stare I can afford or pick up before some other lucky sod gets it before me.

This brings me to my point, 'Brostep' Isnt aimed at audiences willing to pay for there music. All the kids jumping on the Doctor FluxSrillcision bandwagon listen to there tracks on youtube at home. If they do get the full release, they head over to the nearest torrent site and get it there. Compared to the deeper sound there is hardly any 'bro' pressed to wax, only the top dogs in there area such as Circus, Rottun/EX7 etc. These labels started off this trend with Excision & Datsik's Mechstep and Flux's and Doctor P's Screectothepointithurtsyourearsstep and were original with the sounds, But even then, its like 1 vinyl a year or something. I dont think these labels make much money from releasing music. There fan base isnt willing to pay for a nice wav quality version of Bass Cannon or Swagga, They will however pay £15 to have that screeching in there ear 10-6 every friday night with there mates getting shitfaced, filling out the venue to over capacity.

This is opposite for the original sounds of Dubstep, Were much more honest, Im also going to say 'mature' as I think thats a nice word lol. We want the best with the music. We want to support our favorite artists, not only with there releases but at gigs also, The majority of us here have turntables, We pay like £20 a week on vinyl, hence were all broke and cant get to fridays gig so we sit on the forum bitching about all the 'brosteppers' raving into the night to Flux. Nah real talk now, We support our artists by paying for there releases,we also go to there gigs, our favorite artists can receive reasonable feedback on there newer tracks instead of the usual youtube filth comments the bro producers get. Deeper artists have a lot more love to there songs, they last a lot lot longer, the anticipation is so high for the majority of releases.

Yea it is kinda sad that artists arnt getting as much money from there gigs as some do make a living from them. but Im sure on the release side of things, its not to bad.

Hopefully this 'bro' phase will end soon however and all the kids will get a decent home system and get educated or as cityzen said: they'll grow up.

Conclusion
Brostep = Aimed at gigs for profit
Dubstep = Aimed at releases and gigs

IDK, if these people aren't willing to support the artists they like, continue to just pick up and drop whatever's is hot and just jack stuff off the interwebz, then I feel this has much wider implications for society as a whole.
I have to believe many of these kids will fix up. The alternative is a dark, dark future.
A ray of hope is the fact that I read a lot of comments on DSF about how people started listening to the more tearout kinda stuff and then moved on to the other stuff, just as triggy said (Distance though??). In my limited experience, the people that like Skrillex type stuff are all 14, 15, 16 years old - limited life experience, limited musical experience. They will mature!

Well... I really don't think it's about age mate. Yes, i did get into dubstep 3-4 years ago through Caspa and Rusko's mixtape. But almost immediately after getting into what dubstep really was at that point i was attracted more to the deeper sounds and especially Tempa, Kraken, Deep Medi, Tectonic etc. etc.

And my point is? Only two days ago i turned 17 which means that i got into dubstep at an age of about 12-13. You'd probably still call me a kid. And no, i don't like brostep, Mid-Range Crack, Flith and whatever it is called now a days. I really just think it's about taste and about knowledge of music.

We don't really like generic pop-music either do we? The answer is no and we don't like generic brostep - But sadly not all people think like us and have an understanding of what music really is.

And yes, brostep is a bloody cash-cow... Look at 12th planet for gods sake. He used to make deep dubstep with a ton of vibes - Now he makes music with Skrillex. And yes it's sad.

But like most pop-culture-phenomenons i believe that brostep will die out. Bass-music will never die, dubstep might, but then it'll just be called something different. Bass music is probably one of the fastest evolving kinds of music ever seen, and one of the most creative. Therefore we have to salute Swamp81, Nonplus, Hot Flush, the multiverse gang, Tempa and everyone else who pushes good music. Fuck brostep, it'll be over soon.

I didn't say that all kids listen to 'brostep'. But as my first post said, it was a very dumbed down version of my view.
My point is that the vast majority of people at 'brostep' nights here in the U.K are at the bottom end of the clubbing age range, 18-22ish. They'll either move on in the scene or move out of it. I can't see people listening to the harder stuff in their mid to late twenties and beyond. It has a short shelf life, imo. Luckily for 'brostep' producers, kids are being born each day.

@JensMadsen: Congrats on being so young and so clued up. Stories like yours help restore my faith in humanity :)

I imagine this to be the case.

Most of the 'kids' (dunno if I should use that word) will probably know very little about the tunes being played out, having heard a few they like on YouTube or whatever. They just wanna party . :D

Yeah Distance, Amazing producer! Hes older stuff was still pretty midrangey, he's just smart enough to pack a massive sub underneath it, Think is first album, 2007 I think it came out? tunes like Traffic, Night Visions, very very subby, but also listenable to if you dont have a sub. Thats where I was coming from, you could proberly listen to that on youtube and like it if you didnt really have an understanding of sub bass etc. I did lol, just like it a lot lot lot more now than I do :P

and I agree, alot of brosteppers are usually younger, but there are gonna be some much needed Deep heads in there aswell (JensMaden) I was either very late 15 or very early 16 getting into the sounds of dubstep, then 16-17 for the deeper stuff. But saying that, back then there was no Brostep, would I of liked it if there was? I highly doubt it. :dunce:

Yes artists are making more money off being in brostep and that is probably a large factor but I don't think that it the sole reason for people doing it.

I would have thought where they get to play makes a big difference as well. Skream now will have a sell out nearly every show and it will be full of people going absolutely mental for him. regardless of what music you are playing that has got to feel amazing. Compare that to lots of deep nights for instance I went to see Tunnidge the other week and it wasn't a packed night by any standards. Also there is not really anyone going overtly mental for it just more a quiet respect. On top of this bro step acts are getting to play festivals as well which must be a great experience. Can't believe anyone would not want to do that.

brostep music also gets more radio time as well which again must be pretty awesome regardless of whether it makes you any extra cash or not.

PS I agree with the whole distance being accessible to all. back when I was getting into it all and was more brostep focused he was one of the few 'deeper' producers who I liked.

Oh right, I see what you mean. It's just when I read the phrase 'mid range' I automatically (in error) think shit, so I was a bit puzzled to see Distance lumped in with that other lot.

this is a solid topic.

Mala has been quoted saying things about his music being "mature" or "adult listening." and i cannot agree more.

i am from California and i am 25 years old. i've been listening to Mala since 2007 or so.........

i got into DMZ and Swamp81 labels off the bat and i figured that that WAS dubstep. i didn't grow into this scene listening to any brostep bullshit. when Excision and Datsik blew up, i just figured it was short term rubbish, still do today. in the end, i think the music speaks for itself and has it's own listeners. like any other musical genre i guess. i love to meditate off heavy bassweight in the dark, so Mala and his style of "dubstep" will always be what i listen to. Nuff respect to everyone else producing music, but if it isn't heavy and spiritual, it just wont play on my system. i dont see much positivity in the midrange, smashy brostep, nor do i see a ton of progression, so i just wont listen to it. my energy and devotion will always lay with the originators of the game. period.

listen to what is true to you. then it will all work out.

I just got into dubstep in the past year, so i might not have anything that worthwhile to contribute. But i can say that i disagree with some of the grouping as all kids being brosteppers. Im only 15, but even after just buying a $30 pair of skullcandys with decent bass, i dropped brostep immediately. I feel like the only people that still listen to all this is the people who dont care enough to upgrade from the speakers that came with their macbooks, or douchebags who just want to go get wasted and headbang to doctor P.

Idk, maybe im just rambling.

Perhaps the way I phrased it was a bit ambiguous but I wasn't implying that all kids are brosteppers. If that were the case, 'brostep' would be quite the world phenomenon wouldn't it. :a:
What I meant was it's generally the younger people that listen to it, but I think I already said that in a previous post.

tbh I would argue there is an immature element to that side of the scene, just looking at names of certain artists and tracks, "filthier than..." comments, the tendency to label things as "gay"...

So, what about us kids who love both sounds? Are we just not allowed to? Is something wrong with me for liking brostep AND skream/benga/burial/ etc ?
