Haven't been into anime in a long time and recently re-watched all my cowboy bebop dvds, then watched gurren lagaan. I'm pretty much an anime noob. Can anyone recommend some good series? Preferably darker, more adult themed stuff, heavy violence a definite plus.

serial experiments lain, boogiepop phantom, X series, ninja scroll series, full metal alchemist brotherhood (actually really good!), shinsen, freedom, blood+, elfen lied, gantz, berserk, tsubasa chronicles, samurai champloo, cowboy bebop, hellsing, wolf's reign, trinity blood, claymore, Ghost in the shell SAC, xxxholic, darker than black, houshin engi, escaflowne and witch hunter robin off the top of my head

anyone else catch FMA brotherhood? the original series was shit, but this one was really good imo

i wish there were more vampire hunter d's! there are almost 30 books, why only 2 movies? yoshitaka amano kills the artwork for the series... huge fan

Other way around in my humble opinion. Original series cut it off before it got boring.

really? first series was over 100 episodes so it seemed like tons of filler to me,,, apples and oranges i guess!

If we're getting surreal, catch this. One of my favourite animations going.
Wicked little anime series. Totally different to what everyone expects when I show them 'anime'. The director's follow-up was nominated (might've won actually) an Oscar.

Elfen Lied is pretty shit once you get past the gratuitous violence imo.
Other stuff:
Fist of the North Star is the original hyper-violent series,
Tokyo Tribe 2 is an awesome gang-related series with a kickass soundtrack to boot.
Gurren Lagann (from the same studio as Evangelion is amazing if you're looking for something that's just pure awesome and doesn't give a shit about shit I'm sure Parson would dig all the shit about extraterrestrials in it too.
I haven't really got fully into it yet, but Deadman Wonderland seems really cool after seeing the first couple episodes.
If you want movies, check everything Studio Ghibli has done, everything Satoshi Kon has done(especially Perfect Blue and Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, Ghost in the Shell 1+2, Akira, The Animatrix, and Appleseed.
