Hi,

I'm new to this forum and just started out experimenting with mixing dubstep.
I can mix house, cuz thats my main-style, but I'm really having trouble with mixing dubstep.

The main problem is the BPM differences, I can't tell how much BPM a track is
Are there any ways to calculate of hear how many BPM the track is?

Because my cd player says at one point 95 BPM and 20 secs later 140 BPM.
It's really confusing :P

So if you have any tips/tricks or suggestions for me please tell me! I would really appreciate any help on this confusing issue :)

Greetz,

YLF

i play with these until they're the same :Q:

also it's good to remember that not all tracks need to be the same bpm for a mix to work

Thats the problem, dunno how to mix dubstep. For house it's easy to beatmix. For dubstep it isn't

just not true... i find house so much more difficult because the bpm ranges so much more than the traditional 138-142 of dubstep

also, what MikeE said. use your ears not your eyes.

That's true, everyone has its own style ;) But I find it just really hard to hear :P So if anyone has some tips for me it would be great. Cuz mixing dustep is real fun :) Just the beatmatching part is difficult for me because im used to that steady 4 kicks

Mix from the first kick and the hi-hats, much easier.

Snare hits are also a good reference point I find. I'm still pretty bad at beatmatching though so I don't know if my advice counts for anything.

In the same way you pretty much always get 4 kicks in a house pattern, you get a kick on the first and snare on the third in dubstep. (there may be other shit in between tho. Use these as reference, but hi-hats are usually good point of reference too.

every track is 4x4 really anyway. its no difference to mixing house, just because you can hear 4x4 kicks all the time.

Vast majority of tracks are 140 nowadays anyway. Barely have to do anything.
