When to buy a new macbook?

Post by lyons238 » Thu Jun 09, 2011 6:39 pm

right now im using a late 2009 white macbook unibody (2.26ghz c2d, 4gb of ram, 500gb 7200rpm hd). i use reason, but soon to be reason + record.

im wondering when the best time to buy a macbook pro would be? im going to get a 15" pro i7. i kind of want one for this upcoming christmas. or should i hold out until the new ones come out next year? i really can't decide but if i get one sooner than later i need to start saving now.

also how much do you think i could get for my macbook? its in IMMACULATE condition. it has had a keyboard cover, palm guard, hardcase, and neoprene sleeve since day one, so this baby is mint. not to mention iv always kept it running cool, watching my cpu temps etc. also, it has 2 more years of applecare and a freshly replaced battery.

i know there is mac buying guides out there but im looking for your guys opinions from a producers point of view. wub if you don't like this thread you can delete it i wont be offended. love you mah dude :w: no homo

is there actually anything wrong with the one you already have? i don't see the point in wasting money on a new one.

Personally i would sell the macbook and build a production pc with a nice big monitor or two. would have a faster pc for producing and much more screen space. and would still be cheaper than a macbook

When i had a 13' macbook i just hooked it up to a 23 inch monitor for some 1920x1080 bizness. Might be the best option if you don't need to upgrade

@dubfreak: im not in the situation to have a laptop and a production pc. im in college and move back home for the summer and a laptop just suits my needs with school djing parties etc...so id rather just have a really nice laptop.

@gurnumsbug: you are right that apple is more expensive for the technical specs that you get. but honestly i hate windows and no windows computer ever feels as simple and smooth as a mac. my macbook of lesser specs runs much faster and smoother then my friends desktop which has higher specs. apple just does it right. im willing to pay the extra money to stick with apple. plus the software is huge for me. again i cant stand windows.

@2day: yaya thats what im sayin man 13" is just a bit small for my tastes. would really be nice to have a 15" monitor and some more power under the hood. also i could check ebay but i havent found any macbooks that come with all the accessories, applecare, and is in as good of condition as mine really. but i guess i wont get as much as id like since most ppl buying a computer just want the computer at first and worry about all that other stuff later.

@JT7: yeah im actually thinking of buying a 24" monitor..but i kind of wanted to save that money towards a new laptop first yanno? what do you think i should do? save it for a new MBP or get a 24" monitor, a bluetooth keyboard, and use my wireless mouse for now?

If your not maxing out anything and are planning on sticking with Reason/Record then you might not need to upgrade. Depends if you think you need the extra power. I used a wired saitek mouse (about £5) and the wireless mac keybaord. Worked a treat for the time I was using it.

Even if you get a new macbook then a screen would be useful, Think the smallest for 1980x1020 is 22 inch? They must be dirt cheap in the US these days if your not set on a 24inch. If you have been on a 13 inch screen getting a bigger monitor will improve your workflow, I know how things can get cramped on the standard screen.

not running out of power but it does get up there on cpu usage while playing a project with a bunch of tracks and fx chains etc. only really while playing it back though so its not too much of a problem. but i still would like to have a new shiny mac with more processing power.

and i found a really nice 24" samsung monitor for 250 bucks on ebay. brand new. i think thats pretty cheap. although it would be nice to find one for 199. a 22" monitor would probably do but i figured a 24" would keep me from needing to upgrade.

i have a 42" tv which i tried to use but its too big. and i have a 32" tv which i tried to use but its a cheap 1080i tv and it looks like shit and doesnt show the top panel or dock for some reason...

 yeah I tried a 32 Samsung TV from 2005 before. It looked like garbage, best to get a dedicated monitor really. Seems like your set on a new mac then dude. Just have to start saving :corndance:

Isn't it still a mini display port to hdmi/dvi? Was on my 2010 macbook. Not sure on the newer models

EDIT You were probably being sarcastic :t:

When should you buy a new macbook? Never! And your current one atm, take a shit on it and throw it off a tall building then realising what you paid for it is ridiculous.
