hey, im a pretty new producer and im struggling to find synths that sopund any good (i use ableton btw)
Ive noticed alot of artists are using the joy orbisson 'hyph mngo' style synth recently and im basically asking what it is??
Before people say the whole 'dont copy other artists make your own track style tracks' kinda thing, im not going too, i just need pointing in the right direction
Any help finding this style of synth is much appreciated (remember its ableton i use)

If you want a sound like this you'll need to experiment with chords (check out the midi effect: chord in ableton)
Just a simple saw/triangle will do... + saturation on top
chorus/phaser/flanger, reverb, delay (If you listen to the song, you'll notice it's pretty wide... use this effects to get that wide sound)
Also, don't forget the sub! (That's a sine wave (operator) playing exact the same notes, except don't use chords...)
& yeah, experiment with filters, experiment with glide, experiment with ...

I'm still fairly new and learning myself, but some good advice I've been given, is to just start messing around with your basic soundwaves, and filters/effects, etc. And I guarantee, you'll be surprised at what you end up coming up with. Once you start getting a feel for it, you'll understand more about shaping complex sounds using only basic soundwaves, then you can start messing with more complex things when you feel ready.
I'd also take a few pages of notes on scales, notes, and chords and such. Using the right chords can give a lot of feeling to your mix, and it help to know them, instead of randomly pushing buttons every time you write something. And read Abletons guide or tutorial if they have one. Reading Logic's guide helped me a shitload.
Honestly when I first started out I'd read a few paragraphs about the basics of sound/production, have no idea what I was reading, and then go back and look up all the words I didn't know. In no time I began to understand what everything means, and I def recommend learning ALL the basics before asking how to make specific sounds. It will all make a lot more sense that way.

Its more about what chords are played than the actual sound... I'd also go as far as to say its FM synthesis. Squares/Tri/Saw slightly inharmonic ratio will get you a similar sound.

Yeah, indeed... it's all about the chords!
& Yes, FM synthesis could do the trick... but I bet you could get the sound even without FM! (I'm gonna have a try!)

Use some subtle white noise, and sidechain it to your kicks and snares. He seems to do that.

Gave it a try in this song:
Soundcloud
Kinda nice, but it sucks on it's own. It's really about the chords.

Soundcloud
Took me 15 minutes... It's not perfect (but with some more A-B comparison, I could come pretty close, I think)

Apply an envelope with slow attack to the OSC's finetune/pitch to get that kind of effect.

minor chords are a good starting point, use those with some of the sounds from above and you're rolling
