Anyone ever tried writing/producing in 3/4 or 6/8, tried it yesterday and you can get some great rythems :) got the idea from this (one of my favorite hip hop instrumentals) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_X3xyl6U5_E

I've written stuff in the past that's had shit playing in multiple time signatures. Sometimes it's just simple straightforward stuff like a 3/4 playing over 4/4, but I've done stuff where I'm combining things with stuff like 7/8 and other batshit insane sorts of rhythms.

I do it on very rare occasions, it's fun though because sometimes it can lead to interesting ideas. most of the electronic music we listen to is in 4/4, so i feel like sometimes you're less likely to accidentally "copy" a sound/melody that you thought was your own, which is a problem for me a lot. Also try 6/4. 6/4 is really cool, because if you have a song in 4/4, you can switch to 6/4 without too much disruption in the flow of the song. anything else IMO isn't very useful in most situations. songs in 5/4 and 7/4 etc. are usually hard to follow and "catch" the beat if you know what i mean. Some artists can pull it off though, just for small snippets of the song, Coheed and Cambria, Tool, and a lot of other progressive bands manage to get away with it in small amounts. But yes, embrace the waltz in you!

I don't normally use stuff for an entire song (outside of 4/4) other than 3/4 or 6/8 or another variant of those unless I'm writing tribal percussion sort of stuff, and then I'll just fire up my microphone and play the stuff live track by track instead of trying to program the stuff using samples.

this is a fairly gratuitous plug but the tune in my sig starts in 7 and then moves to 6/8 for the actual groove of the rest of the song. ...i think...i've been known to count 3/4 as 6/8 in the past...

but yeah i really like writing in 3/4 or 6/8, to me they both just have a very natural feel. i've written a few songs in those time signatures. like others have said, you can end up writing some unique, cool stuff once you commit to writing in them. trifonic's "parks on fire" is a huge tune in 6/8. one of my favorites.

I use 3/4 a fair amount... especially worked well for this one:
