(DJing) Speeding up tracks whilst they are playing

Right now im loving the diversity of sound thats going round, but one issue im having is I have a dope track at 125 bpm and another at say 135. Either I have to play one fast or one slow.

If I come out of the previous mix at 125 bpm, the 135 track is gonna sound whack. At home I just slowly bring up the 125bpm track to 130 and mix from there - but ive never tried it recording to see if its noticable, and never tried it playing out to see if I get any funny looks from the DJ crew at a dance.

You reckon this is a valid technique or is it me being lazy? I don't want it to be noticable, but if you bring up slowly right, surely no one can notice a 5bpm increase in trigger finger frequency?

a lot of producers do it I've seen datsik do it a few times.. bringing the bpm up can obviously speed up the track and makes it a little better to dance to, the crowd will appreciate the switch up... fuck what other dj's think spill a drink on their laptop or summin if they dont like it

Brilliant idea...
But I usually start with the first track a bit faster than it is, so in your case i would start with the track as 128 bpm, then gradually increase the pitch of the next track after you've mixed it and its hard to notice, if you do it too quickly you can hear the pitch change.

yeah man, as long as you do it slowly, really slowly, you should be fine but yeah, cut down the differences, so you only have to increase by 3 bpm rather than 5 or whatever

or (if you've already got the dancefloor in your control), just slam it at the breakdown and watch as people go nuts because the tempo's 10bpm faster.

yeah basically what I was trying to say, the crowd aren't going to go home because the bpm is 10bpm faster they dont care about mixing quality for example check borgores videos he sucks at mixing and yet he has millions of fans and people go nuts at his shows.. I actually usually play dubstep at 145bpm when playing live shows as it has a more dancey feel and at a club all your there to do is to dance or skank as some may put it :) just switch it up man

Speeding up is generally fine, slowing down is a bit more of a bitch. I'm assuming you are only doing 120-140 (roughly), however if you wanted to experiment going into dnb/drumstep/breakcore (180-190) there are a few good tunes that speed up (and also slow down) of their own accord for 32/64 bars in the middle, so as long are you are swift at beatmatching you can pull it off.
Tune's I'm thinking of:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY4OaW5kiFY
Reso - Technetium (goes from 170 down to 140 after the first break down)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCp1b8mcCRs
Spor- Dreadnought (drops from 180 to 140 for 64 bars in the middle breakdown)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3pO6wPJsFU
Two fingers - That Girl (spor remix) (goes from 140 at the start into 180 after the breakdown in the middle)

Theres others but that's all I can think of atm. I'm sure theres some for the 125-140 region as well, you just need to look out for them.

back before cd decks/serato if i was doing a pitch/tempo change i would wait for a build with no melodic value like a riser with a drum roll. i could move the fader and actually create more energy with the pitch/tempo change

Fix'd :6:

may aswell contribute to the thread whilst i am here.

what are you mixing with, if u are using software, the pitch tempo-dependant? if so, then i wouldnt change too quick, or maybe switch around in a breakdown. if not, then dont worry about tryin to sneak it in, do it gradually over say 32 bars or something.

bring up the 125 to 130 then the 135 to 130. most of the time the crowd won't even notice seriously they will keep going crazy if they are going crazy already. i didn't even notice a bpm change live in a song that i always listen to it was a good 7 bpm change and I still liked it. i don't think the crowd will care really. but if you are going from a 125 to 135 to 140 and so on make sure you slowly or immediately bring the 135 track which is already 130 to 140. depends on the song just test it out before you perform live. if it sounds good then it's good no need to not play it

average out both tracks

before the 125 make sure your previous track starts 127 or so.
Then take the 125 upto 130, etc.
Hypefiend explained it above.

Try to avoid massive tempo changes in other words.
Make it gradual.

dub siren, pull up first record, drop next record, hail the emperor Haile Selassie over the mic and you're done.
