Post by Dj RoffleMaU » Sun Jun 19, 2011 7:21 pm

Wats up forum!! I started making dubstep bout a year ago and didnt bother asking for advice because I figured I should try on my own first. Ive been getting better and now is the time I feel I should start asking for feedback....this is one of my favorite originals. Thanks for the help!

I like that you tried something different, I can definitely hear the deadmau5 influence.

Production wise I would work on making your percussion hit a little harder. You might want to had some more punch to the kick and beef to the snare... especially at the dubstep part. Also the low end sounded a little muddy to me, if you can tighten up the low end I think it will make your mix a lot clearer.

Keep it up!

I agree this forum could use some improvement on the responses for feedback, everyone is willing to show off their tracks but few are willing to give some constructive feedback.

Writers block is the worst.... For me nothing has really helped except continuing to try to make music until finally that spark gets lit. Also have good habits of working on music everyday really helps me to not fall into writers block. I got a job at a studio this summer so I luckily get to do music related stuff for most hours of the day and it honestly just makes me more creative when I get home.

For the low end thing, you have to remember that pitch (octaves in specific) is logarithmic by a power of 2, so the low end is much more subject to being muddy since an octave or harmonic can be only 20-30 hz away while in the upper range an octave will be 400+ hz away so muddiness is bound to be more of a problem. My solution has come by filtering out the sub content of everything you can without it sounding too thin, and then providing a separate pure sine wave bass below and automate it to follow what everything else is doing so that it blends in. This will generally give you a much tighter low end which will not only give you more power in the sub end, it will also make everything more clear and punchy.

Since you seem to like house/4 on the floor beats a lot I would also reccomend doing this with your kick drum. Get a really punchy kick and filter out its low end and then add a sub below this, and even though drum transients don't necessarily have a "pitch" you may need to adjust the pitch of the kick and the sub so that they blend together nicely.

I hope you found some of those tips useful!
