so i'm selling an imac and trying to figure if there's anyway to restore the OS for whoever i sell it to. problem is, i wasn't given the installation cds from the person i bought the computer from, and i dont really wanna download a cracked copy of the OS unless i have to. is there anyway to wipe my data clean before i sell it?

There should be a way of backing up the os onto a dvd, no idea how you do it on a mac though.

What OS does it run?

You can get the snow leopard retail disk for cheap these days.

Insert the disk > reformat the hd in disk utility > install sl

man, thing is, im selling this beast for rent money and i dont think i'd have the time/funds to purchase a retail disc, so was wondering if there were any alternatives. guess thats probably my best option at this point. thanks for the help

if your that desperate, then just delete all the non standard apps, the contents from the documents/pictures/music/etc folders and change the the user account/address book details.

Then sell it.

Most if not all of you personal information will be gone.

also use an app called apptrap

It should help get rid of any extra bits not stored in the applications folder.
