Getting a good weighty bass?

Hey, first of appologies if this has been asked. I did search but nothing came up in this forum about 'bass weight'.

The type of dubstep (and music) I'm generally looking to invest time into making is slow, gritty and carried a tonne of weight behind the bass. I'm not so good with techniqual terms but I spent perhaps two days trying to add weight to subbass and it's not working.

I'm working with ableton (I don't have NI Massive yet, waiting to find a cheap-ish disc copy cause as you know, money is tight this day and age).
I have the Analog and a few free synths.

I tried having two identical basslines put having on panned more on the L and the other panned on the R but it sounded shit.
Thanks guys if you can throw some insight at a server amateur.

If it's just sub bass you're looking to add, then the sub bass tutorial should answer a lot of your questions; http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=143648
