Various ways to get fat 808-style kicks? (e.g. ramadanman)

i've been trying my hand at basslines consisting of 808-style subby kicks, like ramadanman, boddika, and various others use, but i am often dissatisfied with them, so i'm wondering how other people obtain good, fat subs that also have enough definition.

obviously you can just sample a good one (i can't seem to find many of these, though...most good 808 kick samples i've found are short punchy ones, not longer ones with a nice tail). or you can layer a punchier kick with a simple sine wave you synthesize yourself with ADSR to taste...this second method i've found gets this weird sort of phasing effect for me, though, where the attack sounds a little off.

so i guess my problems so far have been either a) the kicks sound too muddy, per this example: Soundcloud

or b) they have this weird phasing sort of clicky effect, per this example: Soundcloud

any ideas?

woah thanks for those samples electric! i'm sure that'll be very helpful...

links fixed. i'm still curious to know why it has this weird sound at the attack stage for the second track.

Boddika has a real Tr-808 so I'm guessing he's using that a lot of the time.

Other than that all I can add is using good samples - goldbaby do a few different 808 variations (vinyl, tape, put through other analogue bits) but the best ones you have to pay for...

Processing that has helped me with 808s in the past includes compression, parallel compression, saturation, parallel saturation/distortion and of course EQ.
All this plus correct levels are the way to go short of paying big $$ for a real Tr-808.

Search the forum there are a few other threads on this.

That`s why I posted The Machine.
They are direct from the 808.

Why dont you synthesize your own?

That way you have complete control over the sound.

Get a sine wave on an oscilator, and then modulate its pitch with an envelope, Its really easy to do this on any synth. Also add some saturation, kinda tape compress it with psp vintage warmer and your onto a winner.

pitch envelope can add greater punch to an 808 sample

also alter the attack time for the sample if you dont want the click at the start :D

There's also Nepheton, the 808 emulation.
