Logic Pro / Bass & Levels?

Hello,
I have been learning to produce some basic music over the last couple of weeks and am having a bit of trouble with the technical side of things.
With my tracks, I struggle to "bring out the bass" from the rest of the instruments. I have been reading a few tutorials and have noticed how some people turn down the volume on the rest of the instruments. I'm assuming for "headroom"?
How do you get your bass to "stand out" and sound strong?
