Soundcloud - automatic content protection

Post by skevin » Sat Jul 02, 2011 9:48 am

So I done a mix using Ableton and it had a load of Skull Disco tracks including Shackleton - Hypno Angel on it.

When uploading my little creation to soundcloud I got this message -

"Our automatic content protection system has detected that your upload "Skev - Oddles Mix" may contain content that is owned or licensed by Rough Trade (Skull Disco, Hypno Angel).
As a result, we have paused the upload of your audio for the time being.

If you are the original creator of the audio in all its parts, or have obtained all necessary licenses and permissions to upload and share this content, please contact us using the form below."

Now, being that I bought the tracks from junodownload, do I just need to tell them to shut up and let me upload my mix or is it never going to happen?
Also, how did they pick up this track? Using the waveform? All a bit spooky if you as me.

when you upload a mix to soundcloud it actually only takes a couple of second, then some guy has to listen to it, obv.

Most of the internet is done this way with uploading isn't it?

Do you think the guy on soundcloud who does all the listening has an email? I'll send him an email with my invoice for the track. I'll also tell him how nice he is. That should swing things in my favour.

yeah it's weird, hope it never happens to me I guess.

Soundcloud really doesn't seem geared towards studio mixes though, I think, so is that part of the problem? Like, the assumption is that you are using it to upload original productions so it makes sense to have a system in place to stop plagiarism, even though it is just awkward for anyone is only using it for mixes

it's technically illegal to upload a mix with copyrighted content even if you've paid for it, so you've not got a leg to stand on if you were thinking of complaining to soundcloud. it's just something that is almost never enforced so i wonder why soundcloud has decided to?

Yeah I always knew that even when buying tracks you cant really put them into a mix for public download.

Thought they might let me off though. Oh well. Shame really as I was just about to start using soundcloud to upload all my mixes so I can keep a record of them all.

they started doing this a while ago.

My mixes are still up there, maybe Skull Disco put a claim in to Soundcloud to stop people getting hype off their name or something

Just use mixcloud, it's infinitely better for hosting mixes.

This has been on the cards for ages. Copyright law and creative commons and all that have probably been the main reasoning behind all of this anyway.

Just use Mixcloud. If you want to give people DLs of your mixes set up a hosting account like Mediafire, Divshare etc... Mixcloud is better anyways, the apps, pop out player and the fact you have unlimited space for free should be more then enough reasons to use Mixcloud.

yeah Skull Disco have obviously asked Soundcloud to remove any of their stuff... which if you ask me is a bit shitty. At the end of the day you're promoting their music.

yeah that is shitty, especially from an underground dance music record label, aren't they missing a big part of the point of DJ culture and why a lot of their customers buy the tunes in the first place?

aye that's all well and good if I wanted to dl a mix, but I can't put a mix up on mixcloud and tell people they need to use Chrome and then download a mixcloud download extension before they can get my mix, just not efficient enough. People jsut want to click a button and get the mix to listen to later.

Major oversight imo a site for mixes that you can't dl from. Until streaming becomes the major conduit for music in a few years time when clouds and that get going imo

I don't really like mixcloud because it's slow. When you're listening to a mix on soundcloud, it will download the mix from the server at about 2mb/s.
When listening to one on mixcloud, it'll be much slower, about 200-400 kb/s. It sucks because I like to skim through a mix to see if it's worth listening to.

I doubt it was Skull Disco. Appleblim is sound, he doesn't strike me as the type to get militant about this kind of shit at all. Can't speak for Shackleton cos I've never met him, but I doubt its either of their doings. Probably some new Soundcloud policy or something.

But yeah, use Mixcloud for mixes!

Doesn't really work like that as it reads the waveform after you upload and stops the upload if it recognises anything.

I can understand why soundcloud have done it but MEH.

Dont like mixcloud as the people that would listen to my mixes would do so in car/mp3 player etc so they would need to download. Not too bothered by using an upload site but they sure do look suspect...

Maybe email Skull Disco and ask if it's anything to do with them?
