Aquatica - Iconic

Finished what I started last night.

I used the new KRK Powered 8 I bought last week, instead of the old shitty monitor I was using, and it helped a ton with ACTUALLY hearing what I'm writing... This one came out alot alot better.

I really need some feedback, some comments, anything to help... I'm a self taught producer, (as most of us are), and I could really use some tips.

Thanks guys! Keep on producin!

Yeah, I'm working on re-mixing it for the final version, I'll probably work on the wobbles some more too, and take out the bass right before the drop so you actually notice the drop, as well as turning up the synth during the wobbles at the end to the same db level/a little under it.

Thanks for the support guys! This songs given me more comments than anything yet, and I'm excited!

Mate to be fair, im really liking those melodies and combos of synths and LFOs, however as you guessed the mix could do with sorting out.

Drums - They could do with cutting through the mix a lot more, with a tune like this they need to slap you in the face, try layering multiple drums sample under one another for the snare then apply an EQ spike at 200Hz to make it punch. You will probably want to compress it after to stop it from peaking and also to increase the percieved loudness. You might want to think about getting some better samples for those drums, its really worth doing, their are some good drum sample packs on the online stores like producerloops.com or you could maybe torrent the but thats up to you, you will find you will automatically have better sounding drums if you have better samples and make sure they are closer up to the front of the mix. In fact where did you source those samples? I cant really tell whether they are bad or just quiet?

Bass - You should always layer a sine wave (pitched to the sub freqencies) under your midrange bass parts, and as you said dont have any bass directly before the drop as it will lessen the impact... and everybody wants that chest shattering drop. Make sure nothing interferes with the sub bass as well so you should low cut everything below about 150Hz.

I hope you dont think what i wrote is being too critical, i really liked the music in that track its just a case of brushing up on a few techniques to get it sounding at its full potential, they can all be learnt fairly easily.

This is a good quick tutorial that sums up these points, http://www.youtube.com/user/highrankin# ... z8gVFbglHk

They are from the AA Vengeance House Beats Vol 2 Sample Pack.

And no, your criticism is just what I need man, I've been producing like 3-4 months now, and I really still aren't too sure what I'm doing...

But each song I produce ends up better than the last, and each time I make something, I learn an insane amount... So that's what I'm trying to do.

When you say cut it and EQ spike etc... (In FL Studio) Would that be Parametric EQ 2? Because that's what I've been using to equalize my shit.

Also... Where on the db meter should my drums be at? Like where in the mix?

I've kinda just sorted out on my own where the shit's supposed to be until now.
