I have got to a stage where i want to take my djing further........

and a small fan base is generating from these but i want to know how to get into clubs etc.
If anyone has some tips they would be much appreciated!

Promoters will get you gigs, but most of them are inundated with people asking for gigs already.
Offer to help with promotion, whether flyers, online, or whatever. Make yourself useful. Promoters have no shortage of "Yo, I'm a DJ, can I get a gig please?" DJs.
Working with like minded people helps very much. I don't know about anybody else, but I don't find myself to be compatible with some promoter's attitudes, so I wouldn't bother approaching them asking for a gig. Similarly, if the promoter doesn't like your attitude, you're probably wasting your time. Don't pretend to be something you're not though.

I got my first dubstep gig by helping to promote an event, and then helping to lift their fucking heavy speakers into place on the night.
Unless you're an amazing producer and your tunes have got you booked for a gig without having to lift heavy things or stand in the rain flyering, I'm pretty sure this is how most people get into the DJing game.

all the above basically. as a promoter im really interested in how many people that person is going to bring into my night.... whether it be their friends or people theyve got in through promo work.

Yeah I totally agree with this. I will definitely book a DJ again and again if he brings people consistently and not only that but they stay most of the night. Anywhere from 5-10 minimum will look good in my eyes. If you bring 15-20 well you might even get some payment lol.

Anyways my serious pet hate is when a DJ turns up with his mates, does his set and then leaves straight after to go to some other night or party ... I'm like "are you fucking kidding me?". I don't usually say anything but I can guarantee you it'll be very unlikely that I book that DJ again. E.g. I had one DJ who was first to play, who turned up with about 10 of his mates who just sat on chairs looking miserable and then after his set they all left. Needless to say I never booked that guy again.

Sending tapes and links to mixes never seemed to get me anywhere much. Almost anything I've ever got DJing has been through people I know, other friends/DJ's and recommendations. Gotta put yourself out there- talk to people at nights and get to know the promoters and DJs, and like people said- play early and for free, help promote the night, bring friends along etc.

Almost every big name DJ out there is a either a producer or have promoted their own nights/labels....seems the way to do it if you want to go that next step.

besides whats been mentioned making tunes helps.

if there was a guaranteed formula for it then we'd all be superstar dj's.

other then that everyone else has talked a lot of sense. make tunes and promote nights. there doesnt seem to be a fast track route (unless you're related to someone famous or used to be in an indie band)...

Some people just get a name 'cause they're pushy even though they may make very average music. No names mentioned of course.
