I notice a lot of people seem to cut the bass out of their drums, then layer another pattern of pure Sub underneath....

Do any of you lot have your sub be purely derived from the drums? I find it much easier to build a rhythm and warmth from letting my kicks hit 20hz, as soon as I cut they become more detached and lifeless...

You can get different effects from each technique. If you are re doing a sub hit under the highs of another kick it could be beneficial as you can pick the note of the sub hit a lot easier than having to tune a kick with a sub already in it (although obviously when a sub goes past a certain point anyway you can't really pick out a note as well). I personally like to use the kicks as they are and avoid doing the sub myself, but thats just preference

it`s a fine balance.
I find cutting too low just looses all the oompf.
Use your kick as you like and just use side chain compression to make it fit with the sub.
It`s generally what I do.
Change the ratio and attack to hit and release almost unnoticed.
I`ll often use an 808 kick for the lowend and just eq to hit harder with side chaining to make sure the sub frequencies don`t clash.

there's a lot of genres where there isn't even a typical sine sub, it's mostly uk-based stuff that's got highpassed kicks. techno and house for example are all about the thump of the drum, but then again it's straight 4 to the floor music so it works well that way.

for dubstep i could imagine a nice subby kick only working if you have a sparse tune with a lot of call and response between kick and ideally some 808-based subs, bass & space, getme.

edit: oh i forgot, electro (as in oldschool electro and the newer revival of it like boddika) has really really meaty kicks as it's mostly 808 based. shit's punchy as fuck
