Dub and Roots music

Post by Dub Pilgrim » Sun Jul 24, 2011 7:16 pm

Obviously Dub music and its spacing is highly influential to the scene, more so in the past. I was wondering how many of you guys are into the Reggae and its parts and also sound system culture?

I'm into it man. I would say however that it has such a vast and expansive history (compared to other genres like jungle, garage and dubstep which for the most part were/are underground movements) I have little knowledge of good tracks / versions and probably artists as well.

I've seen Channel One Soundsystem (x3), Mad Professor (x2), Gussie P, Iration Steppas and Scientist (on the 'Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space' tour with The Upsetters). All of which were fantastic.

I do have a real soft-spot for steppers tracks and versions. They always make me skank like a fucking madman!

I'm still currently in the 'stumbling around' period of musical discovery, where the vast majority of the music you hear is new to you and you're maybe not sure what variety of sound you really like.

Into all the aspects as well. I'd like to build a system at some point too, I have done it in the past but nothing serious. As for the music, mostly into dub, roots, and quite a bit of lovers rock stuff as well. Of course because of that, also very into dub inspired music besides dubstep especially dub techno, and other spaced out music like so called black ambient, drone etc.

Fully into the Dub and Reggae also, have been for a lengthy part of my life, Sound System culture is also really interesting to me, though in my part of the country there is little to nothing going on around it. Have attempted to rectify this in the past, but time, resources and interest from others has been minimal.
There is a small thriving scene in other parts of the country.

Also this:

New Zealand has a well established love of reggae and related genres. The enthusiasm isn't quite there as much as it used to be, I guess that's just a generational thing though.

If I had to pick a favourite genre of music it would probably be roots reggae / dub / ska etc.

Yabby You probably my favourite artist.... or Winston McAnuff

I think this is a gorgeous song, especially the words

If it was made before 2009 I'm not interested, it's usually shite.

Yeah it's a nice little film, I think 2008, not that old. hearing the old guys like Bunny Lee talking about the beginning is always interesting. His room of old reel to reels, tape, vinyl is amazing. I hope it's surviving down there, I was always curious if they were going to try to back them up digitally. Goes against the point I guess, but like he said in the doc... some irreplaceable music in that room.

Another good one from the 70s:

Had a feeling it would be close to everybodies hearts.

I recently went to a Jah Shaka night in London and the only way i can describe it is if your remember your first DMZ, being in that holy trance, might as well be you a sysem and the dj. Pure power!
Love the idea of versions, King Tubby absolutely killed it for years in Kingston.

Has anybody seen Bristol's Dubkasm? ive seen them a couple of times and they really take you back to the old days, analog production too!!!

As for that night in brixton, is that the same night as FWD? ive got to go one love on friday rather than saturday for that! Missing Scientist :(
