Nailgun!

Post by Mammoth » Wed Jul 27, 2011 6:02 am

Meh. First electronic song produced.
Don't hold back give me your brutally honest opinions!
Just realized how loud my kick is  I'll post it again tomorrow with the fixed kick. Too tired.
ANY tips on EQing and mixing/mastering would be great too. :)

Don't hold back give me your brutally honest opinions!
snare is too dark and quiet, try layering a clap on top; the structure of the track could benefit from some risers/white noise sweeps/crash cymbals to punctuate it; the hi hats are far too quiet and very basic, maybe put some other ones in there as well and use a bit of syncopation. Also it sounds almost like a crunk backing with those drums

Reverb is your friend! set up a reverb aux channel and use it as a send for most of your channels, experiment with what sounds better with reverb and what sounds better without.

Overall, it's not half bad for a first production - normally people's first attempts are a distortion fest of horrible digital clipping but this is a relatively clean mix :)

Layer your synths and basses and change the snare to something a little more defined. Other than that I like the base of your song, the notes go well together, and it has a good flow. Just work on the mixing and mastering and you will have yourself a great song.

1st tune man? Great work!
The good things: you have a very good sense of melody, progression and structure which is absolutely essential!
What could be improved: as you already pointed out yourself the kick is a little too loud, the snare is too quiet and lacks higher frequencies to be snappier. I wouldn't say that to any beginner but you seem to be ready to learn about snare layering so have a search in the production forum or google about it.
The yoy bassline is just overused, you'd do yourself and the scene a great favor by trying something new ;-)

Replaced the yoy bassline (not my doing by the way lol), changed the snare from such a hip-hop 808 to a snappier 909 sample layered with a clap, and working on reverb now. I have no experience with electronic drum patterns. ( Thanks 1point5) Thanks all for the help.

@Daft I got my sense of melody, progression, and chords through jazz haha. 4th year Jazz bass masterclass student. No experience producing electronic music, hence the bad mastering. (EQing upright basses is for wussies)

I love how you can always tell someone who was a musician before they were a producer ;)

Yeah it's obvious to me. Arpeggios come pretty easy to me also as I play the banjo ;)
