I've been sitting at the computer a good 3 hours now and this is what I have to show for it. This is my second ever attempt at making a dubstep beat. I used a lot of classic Brick Top quotes from the movie Snatch. I may have taken it too far, but I don't care because I like it haha. I know nothing of mastering nor engineering so constructive criticism is HIGLY encouraged and any kind of tip would be VERY much appreciated. Thanks!

Make sure you've got a decent set of headphones or ideally some speakers with good range. This is what worked for me when I was starting out, may not be to everyones taste but give it a go :) - For every track you're going to need to EQ it. This means clearing the sound of any unwanted drifting into unesasery frequencys and making the most of where it sounds nice in the range. Load up and EQ, all DAWs have a built in one but something like iZotope alloy will sort you out a treat if you're feeling splashy with the cashy. It's mainly about making sure each instrument has it's own frequency to breath in and dosn't clash wih others. So kicks are going to want to be high cut, along with your bass (try and get these to sit in slightly differnt places because you don't want them clashing... or get some sidechainging on the go (google it)). Snares somewhere around the middle with some focus on the lower end to give them that 'punch'. Synths around the upper mid and hats etc up top.. When I was starting out trying to get levels right I found the best way was to turn everything down and start by bringing up the drums. Make sure they're sounding nice and balanced, then turn up your bass. Keep an eye on your master channel and if it's clipping turn it down. Then up the snares and anything else making sure you can hear everything clearly. Keep and eye on the master throughout, don't let it clip. Now grab a professionaly released and mastered track that has a similar sound and start comparing volumes. Do your drums hit at the same level, how loud is your bass compared to theirs etc... Do all the fine tuning etc.

ORRRRRRRRRRRR.. read the production bible on these forums (it's way better than this crap ^) :)
