Donnie Darko vocals

I've been lurking DSF for a while and finally had a question that I couldn't find a thread for:

What techniques do you guys use/would you use to make a mundane vocal sample sound like Frank's voice in Donnie Darko?

I've tried layering a pitched up and pitched down version on top of each other, putting a little flange/phaser on them and panning each. This wasn't quite it though. Thanks in advance!

yup, pitch up/down, stretch, chorus, reverb, saturation. Also, you might want to try vocoding a white noise signal with the voice ;)

try all sorts of stuff. A good vocoded signal with a good vocal sample sounds phenomenal.

I just tried the white noise vocoding (fruity vocoder) with the sample I used in this track:

Soundcloud

That was quite the pro tip!
