My mate's having a beef on facebook that the FTSE dropped 100 points in a day which hasn't happened in the past 3 recessions (~3.5% drop) but the news is going to go on about the riots for the next month...

Yeah, but the more I learn about it, the more it is just seems to be based on make believe, trust and panic- I don't have any better ideas, but seems like a crappy system to me.
