The impression from the stateside is that the rioters are just a bunch of bored, angry thugs. The same types who looted during Hurricane Katrina here in the USA and in Canada when that hockey team lost.

Is this impression correct?

Not bored; i'd say more influenced by the prospect of free material possessions they can't afford.
