Workflow question (Reason, FL, Cubase, Abelton)..
Hey fellas, as I stated in other threads, I've been using reason 5 exclusively lately cause of cpu problems (cpu with cubase and vsts crashed) but I've been pleasantly surprised at the speed with which I can lay down ideas and the "skeleton" basics of a track in reason vs cubase. While I'm not yet getting the quality of individual synth sounds I'm accustomed to yet, I see the possible advantages of workflow creativity wise. Question is, disregarding rewire, do any of you guys use reason (or fl, abelton, etc) for building a quick base musically for a track and then tidy up everything in another daw such as cubase? For instance getting the track down with simple patches and sounds and exporting midi (and any sounds worth keeping) and then replacing the bass and synths etc, with massive or other fat vsts? I'm thinking this might be a good idea and as it will be awhile before my other pc is fixed I was hoping someone could let me know if they work this way and if it's beneficial to them and expedient? I can't stand having a great idea for a bassline or something and getting trapped fine tuning the synth sound for hours on end. I really do try not to do this but I can't seem to help myself no matter how hard I try haha, OCD much? Other than that just want to say thanks for the gracious help on this forum even though I'm pretty new here, and American lol!

tons of people rewire for just that REASON. i use just reason and record and i love it. for the most part i can get my ideas down very quickly. especially now since i have a huge template document with a bunch of combis and 30 drum channels all set up ready for samples to be loaded into. really speeds up my workflow instead of spending an hour wiring shit up at the beginning.
and trust me you can get quality synths no problem out of reason without even touching another daw.

Oh definitely, I know it's capable of sick and nasty production (ie. Fuzion, Cookie Monsta, etc..) but I already usually get my personal sound from Massive, Z3ta +, Albino, Alchemy, Surge, ect, and will be using those in Cubase again once my studio pc is fixed, but I may rewire as well now that Ive been forced to learn reason and enjoy it's workflow. But since I already have learned how to get the sounds I want out of those vsts and resampling Im thinking about writing the track quickly, even with just initialized patches in whatever reason synth, and then just spitting out arrangements, and sequenced chord progressions via midi so I can easily replace the sounds with my vst synths (once they are working again). If I take the time to create designed sounds initially in Reason it puts me back where I started, in terms of my unavoidable OCD tweaking habits. Make sense? Of course if I didn't have my native daw and vsts coming back to me I would spend the time to really squeeze what I could sound wise out of reason. So when you rewire are you doing it strictly for midi purposes or to incorporate actual audio and effects from Reason? If I'm only wanting to use the midi are there any advantages, other than time spent bouncing, to rewiring as opposed to just exporting and then importing the midi files into Cubase?lyons238 wrote:tons of people rewire for just that REASON. i use just reason and record and i love it. for the most part i can get my ideas down very quickly. especially now since i have a huge template document with a bunch of combis and 30 drum channels all set up ready for samples to be loaded into. really speeds up my workflow instead of spending an hour wiring shit up at the beginning.

..and on the note of being in the US, what's going down on the streets over there guys? Those riots must be pretty bad for them to warrant delaying the start of the football season! Can't remember anything ever getting in the way of English football, aside of WW2 of course. But seriously hope they haven't affected any of you guys personally.
