Re: Smooth synths vst
Thats a nice sound. 2 things stand out to me: bandpass and phaser.
Makes me think of a nord.

Detuned triangles, pitched down octave, lots of glide/portamento, increased attack on the ADSR envelope.
Any 2 oscillator synth should be able to manage that tbh.

Re: Smooth synths vst
also try recording any pad sound through a 100% wet reverb with lots of highs (like the freeware TAL-Reverb III for example - more freebie reverb VSTs here). bounce that and you'll get a nice lush sound to begin with, that you can further enhance with some other effects like perhaps some mild chorusing, a bit more reverb, etc.
another technique i use sometimes - Ambience reverb (a nag-free donationware by Magnus of Smartelectronix) has a neat HOLD button which basically makes your reverb go on forever. play a synth C note through that, bounce around 20 seconds of it, then load it in a sampler and you have a big sound that you can further tweak inside the sampler and add external effects.
